Hi Peter. It's really difficult to see as it's a coin type battery inserted into a slot. I can't see a way to open up the case either, not without causing damage. If I could then I'd be fairly confident that I diagnose the issue. Very frustrating, but John's link may just be the answer.

If it's a coin/button battery, it is in the right way up?

Sometimes it's easy to overlook the simple things.

A fair question to someone who didn't even realise they had a DVD player in the first place, but no, I've tried that.

I've gone ahead and bought this remote as discovered by John L:

Will post to let you know if it works...

This may be the one, take a look. Search on rc-3210a.

Please let me know if it works
Hi John,

Exciting news (in the context of in-car entertainment that is) - the new controller works!! You'll sense a 'but' coming...

It has clearly turned on the player as both screens now display Volvo for Life, the player automatically selects the correct slot for the DVD, but then nothing. I've attached a screenshot of what it now rests on and this doesn't change regardless of what buttons I use. I've also attached a picture of the current settings.

The main point to note is that there is no sign of the DVD player trying to spin the disc, no noise at all in fact after it has loaded the disc.

Am I missing something obvious?

Thanks

Can't upload images at the moment, but will try again if it's critical to diagnosis!!

Hi Toby

I have not tried to diagnose any further as mine just simply worked.

It does appear that the player is interfacing to the screens and good news that the remote works.

There is a signal cable running between the player and the adapter under the left floor. You might have a look and make sure there are no lose connections but I fear the player itself may be faulty.

This whole 10xDVD, screens and interfacing are a UK specofic standalone unit that does not interface to volvo diagnostics, so Vida would be of no help

I can see second hand units on eBay for under £100 so may be your only option. If it still does not fix the problem you should be able to relist that unit on eBay.

Again, sorry you are still having problems.. The unit was designed by a Mr Peter Elliott, he was active on this forum and if he sees this post met be able to hell further.

Another thought is that the video/audio inputs between row 3 seats will probably still work, so you could perhaps interface a standalone device.

Cheers john l

I'll see what else I can find out, but what would be useful to know when you're next near in the boot is whether you can hear the DVD player kick into life and start 'whirring' when you turn the power on.

My guess is that the player is faulty, but I'm not giving up just yet.

I did wonder about the ports at the back so maybe that will be a good back up option.

Thanks as always John.

His again

You will see a fuse in the ecu left hand side of the boot. One of the fuses is for DVD, may read multimedia or infotainment or something like. If you remove this fuse and then replace, you can hear the DVD unit clunk into life. This is the same if you remove the plug from the DVD unit and replace. The unit seems to initialise. I suspect it is bacically working due to thd fact that you get the 'volvo for life,' logo.

But just a thought, have you tried to eject the 10dvd caddy? if i remember, this should whirr and pop out when eject button pressed on the unit itself. But I think you are beyond this, it is just getting the DVD to play. Have you just tried a music CD?

I will have a play tomorrow (rain forecasted here first thing) and see that other noises it makes when selecting the dvd.

Cheers

Ejecting the caddy works fine. I'll have a look at removing the plug and/or fuse, but as you say it looks like I'm getting power so I doubt that'll be the issue.

Time for some forum hopping!

Cheers

Bingo!!!! Yet again John you've only gone and cracked it - unplugged the cable adapter and replaced and we're in business! Basically it's the old turn it off and on again trick, but never more satisfying.

Really can't thank you enough!!!!

So now we just need to get some headphones and our trip to the Lake District is looking a whole lot easier. I'm sure I've read somewhere that someone has managed to tune the radio to the correct frequency to get sound through the speakers - will let you know if I have any joy.
