A car to survive the Apocalypse? NO VOLVO
It's 2019.
North Korean missiles have gone wildy astray. As a result, the United Kingdom has been reduced to a pile of smoldering rubble. You'd been traveling alone on business when the missiles hit. You soon come to realize that you are the ONLY survivor of the strike in your local area. You must leave your current location (A Travelodge in the city of Glasgow) and venture South-East on a perilous journey to reach the safety of the nearest Civilian Emergency Refuge Camp, 500 miles away at the ferry port of Dover, where your friends and family are safe and well. Amongst the chaos, increasing reports of zombie-like creatures emerging from the rubble add extra cause for alarm. Due to the sheer destruction that has occurred, it will only be feasible to reach the Civilian camp via country lanes and dirt tracks, or by forging your own path through forests/woods and other areas of countryside. All Motorways/Dual Carriageways/A-Roads have been destroyed. Looking around the ruined Travelodge car park, you can see that only 6 vehicles have survived, and EACH have a full tank of fuel. Unfortunately, no Volvos...... You can obviously take only 1 vehicle, so which do you choose? Which of these famously reliable vehicles will most likely ensure your survival? Which will certainly get you to the safety of the Civilian camp? Here are your weapons of choice, get voting! 1. Mercedes W124 2. Honda Accord 1992 3. BMW E30 3 Series 4. Lada Riva 5. Peugeot 504 6. VW Golf Mk2 Have fun and discuss! Last edited by T5R92011; Aug 11th, 2017 at 23:54. |

If your car was parked on privately owned land and, due to being distracted or dead , you overstayed your welcome, you might well receive what appears to be a parking ticket entitled something like 'parking charge notice'.
Do not worry about it, it is not a real parking ticket, it's just an invoice. Plenty of advice online, how to avoid payment. |

Very cunning, that poll, obviously designed to distract from the real answer: Volvo 740...

Plus the Mercedes is a W123 not a W124, and without my 740 I'd probably choose the two strongest cars - the W123 or the 504...assuming they're both excellent examples of the type. |

Tough callthis. For me it was a toss up between the Lada and Peugeot, and I've gone for the Lada, simple mechanicals,a hammer, screwdriver and a spanner and you're sorted for a toolkit for any eventuality.

I met a lad at a car show who told me the story of his lada experience.
He took a lada Cossack as part exchange for a car he was selling, thinking he would be stuck with a pile of rubbish he tried to offload it on a local garage who already had 2 ladas and used one as breakdown/ recovery vehicle. Said garage owner told him, " you don't know what you have got do you. Get in and I'll show you." He then proceeded to take the lada over the local mountain, through bogs and over rock outcrops, never once getting stuck. They may be basic but it takes an awful lot to stop them and when they are stopped they are light enough to push out so as to start again. I read somewhere that they were being imported again, however they are far more expensive now than the originals were back in the 80s and 90s. Paul. |

Green Van Man, exactly right! Lada's were designed for Russian farmers, to be able to handle boggy rough terrain, be reasonabmy robust and reliable, and be fixable with the minimum of tools. I'd go Lada, or mercedes. I'd imagine there are more Mercs in the UK, to get spares off, than the Peugeot, Golf or Honda. Beemer too hard to work on?
Prize for the winner? Lada...... |

The Merc in the picture is a W123 which is what I'd take if I could. Otherwise I'd also probably go Lada
