Ah I had an inkling that the speedo issue might've been linked to the overdrive (solenoid?) issue back then as they seemed to happen at the same time, but yeah I'll give a new diff sensor/wiring a look before going at the cluster.
Cheers! |

The rear sensor in the diff provides the signal for the ABS and (assuming your 740 is 1988-1990) after going through a frquency divider that divides by 8, feeds the sppedo with pulses as well.
If yours is an estate, the wiring will travel from the diff towards the left wheel then backwards into the front left of the spare wheel well. It then goes backwards along the left side of the well and crosses over the chassis member next to the fuel filler neck into the cubby hole behind the wheel arch. There it goes into a single use box, black and about the size of half a fag packet. Another place it can chafe is where it passes over the chassis member next to the fuel filler neck - this can also cause a wear hole on either the filler neck or the fuel breather pipe : A few pics there to show what i mean. You can't see the little black box because it's buried under the CD changer (which is now gone) but you can see where the breather pipe on the filler neck had chafed and had a hole and the temporary repair.

Hi. Not sure if you have found the instrument cluster for your 940 yet, but I have one from a 1995 LPT 940, if interested. All gauges and bulbs ok but it is not the cluster with the turbo gauge. Drop me a message if interested. Tinm
