Default Faulty 2012 XC60 dash readout on miles/gal

I am the original owner of a 2012 XC60. From the outset, have used Volvo dealers at all scheduled milepoints.

Strangely, some time in the past week or so, my average miles per gallon dashboard reading suddenly jumped from around the 20 mpg range that has prevailed for most of the last year, to somewhere just north of 27.0 mpg.

Since March of 2020, the car has been out mostly on short trips around town. Very little highway driving over that span.

Since I first noticed this, the dash readout has crept down a couple of tenth's of a mile to the 27.0 reading on the dash today.

Have rotated the selection wheel on the left turn signal arm thru the other tracked items and then put it back on the choice of "average mpg".

That rotation made no difference.

Am curious as to whether anyone might have had a similar experience.

I would be mortified if my average mpg was as low as 20, but jubilant if it the raised to 27. What was the average before last year?

It’s US gallons. A UK gallon is approx 4.45 liters whereas a US gallon is 3.75 litres.

So 27 mpg is equivalent to 32 mpg in UK gallons. Not bad for a petrol.
