Its important that these belts are or have been replaced, as well as the tensioner.

With regards to models to go for, the "SE Lux" is the one that has all you'd need really. If you like the sporty look, then go for R design.

I have an S80 (SE) & my Dad has a V70 (SE Lux), but both are the facelift/P3 models. The only difference between the two trim levels (apart from one being a saloon & the other being an estate is);

V70 (SE lux) has a button you press to close the boot electronically
V70 has xenon lights (SE has halogen)
V70 has driver & passenger electric seats (Driver's seat only in the SE)
V70 has sat nav, but its not the greatest to use (SE has no sat nav)

Apart from those features, the cars are identical. Whether this is the same for the V50, I'm not sure. For example, both have;

Dual zone climate control
Trip computer
Electric/heated mirrors that also fold
Electric windows (4)
Cruise control
Rear parking sensors (although, its odd how my S80 SE has front parking sensors & the SE Lux doesn't). Maybe front sensors were added as an additional item, or possibly fitted aftermarket on my car.

Just check the car you're looking at has all what you want. In hindsight, I should have bought an SE Lux model because the xenon lights are far better than halogen. Although, the SE has pretty much all I want (apart from xenon lights ).

front + rear PDC = optional extra
Sat nav = optional extra **on most
Xenon lights - optional extra on most
Electric seats - optional extra
Trip computer - optional **on some packs
Cruise control = optional on most

unfortunately it is Volvo
so comparing spec level is impossible
why
"option packs" at time of build, you Could get a bogo standard trim with More toys than a "SE lux" is the original owner added all the possible option packs

you can Also find 2 of the Same year with the Same "se lux" and they will have Different toys, due to the option packs,, Some packs preclude the fitting of somethings/remove things from Other option packs,

"R-Design" is just trim, nothing Like a "R" of the past,, its the felt tip fairys version of a "R"
Tho you Can add as many packs as possible, choose the type of suspension ,but your Stuck with the plain bogo stock engine, Zero tuning (as per the Proper R's)

Depending on platform And model, it Sometimes is possible to Add things not included in the car
*the newer the platform/car the harder it is
V50/S40 Without xenon lights = nightmare and £££ to fit Genuine ones With all the needed items (and using aftermarket kits is going to be ££££ to do it properly, if not done properly - mot fail/invalid insurance)
V50/S40 Audio system upgrades ,, forget it sell the car, buy one with the audio package you want its cheaper

I wouldn't assume the cam belt has been done. If there's no receipts or proof of any sort, then you're best getting it replaced for peace of mind.

Don't forget to replace the auxiliary belts too & the tensioner, if there's no receipts to prove they were replaced. There's two auxiliary belts - one for the power steering, alternator etc & the other is for the air conditioning). Don't forget the tensioner, which is another vital part.

Like the cambelt, if either of the auxiliary belts snap, then serious engine damage can be caused.

The auxiliary belt should be replaced every 5 years or 54,000 miles (whichever comes first).

The cambelt recommended replacement interval is 10 years or 108,000 miles (whichever comes first).

Auxiliary belt tensioner should be replaced every 10 years or 108,000 (whichever comes first).

The water pump's on D5's are generally very reliable. If its not making any noise or leaking, then you can leave it alone.

Use Volvo parts if possible. Don't buy cheap aftermarket ones, especially not for critical parts like these.

Common issues

-Listen for any clunks from the suspension. Upper strut mounts are common to wear, as are control arms.

-Listen for clunks or squeaks from the rear of the car. A common culprit is the rear subframe bushings, which perish over time.

-Leaking windscreen - Check that the car isn't misty inside the glass/inside the car or has a damp smell. Its common for the bonding around the windscreen to fail, which allows water inside the cabin. The only real fix is a new windscreen, but this was a manufacturing mistake by Volvo & they usually cover the cost of the windscreen (providing the existing one doesn't have chips, cracks or breaks upon removal).

Then do your usual/normal checks really; Check electric windows, mirrors, air conditioning, door locks, heated seats, electric seats & lights are all operational. Check all the tyres have decent tread on them & check for any unusual wear, which would indicate wrong pressures or a suspension issue.

All good and valid point there Kev but I've got to correct you on couple of the highlighted items, 1st being the Aux tensioner. Volvo had a recall on these and consequently halved the replacement interval times on these to 5 Years or 54K , same as the Aux belts ... My (Euro 4) D5 had that recall 5 + years ago and I replaced both Aux belts & Aux tensioner again last summer.

As for the windscreen leak repair, VOLVO UK will NOT provide you with a replacement windscreen (Free Of Charge) however if you ask them nicely and you're still rocking the original (to the car) windscreen as fitted on the assembly line then they can offer a windscreen re-bond FOC, provided it doesn't crack during removal. Again I speak from personal experience having had mine (original to the car) windscreen successfully re-bonded last Autumn.

haha yes I need an alternative to keep my T5 on the side now.

With addons, im really not fussed. The D5 im looking at has aux and thats all I need really. I prefer less toys on my car really.

Still keeping an eye out on the D5 but still not completly sold as im keeping an eye out on a 1.6D I know these arent great but they are less to insure and less tax which is ultimatly what im after ... but still in 2 minds with everything at the moment.

Oh okay, I misunderstood the windscreen leak repair. So they re-bond your original windscreen free of charge if you ask nicely. However, the windscreen requiring re-bonding needs to have been fitted to the car from the assembly line & is visually in good condition with no cracks etc & doesn't break upon removal (no charges for labour in this case, providing Volvo UK have agreed to do the work free).

If your original windscreen is broken upon removal to do the re-bonding, you have to pay for a new windscreen.

Thanks for the pointer regarding the reduced interval for the tensioner. To be honest, the tensioner isn't a particularly expensive part. As you have to undo the tension on the belts to change them, its not much more work to replace the tensioner itself. I know its additional expense, but replacing the tensioner & the belts at the same time would be a more thorough job & offer peace of mind.

That's right... it has to be the OEM windscreen (as fitted on the assembly line) as that's where the inadequate bonding process took place and obviously the windscreen has to be in reasonably good condition without any obvious damage. More often then not the bond seems to let go at the top of the windscreen, sometimes all the way from one side to the other.

My understanding of why VOLVO HQ are offering this solution FOC is about "SAFETY" as when a large part of the windscreen is no longer securely attached to the vehicle, the structural integrity of the said vehicle is somewhat compromised. VOLVO = SAFETY which makes perfect sense, so good on VOLVO to stick to their core principles

While VOLVO UK offer this re-bond process FOC they do stipulate that on a rare occasion if the old windscreens cracks during the removal procedure, the cost of the new replacement windscreen will be down to the owner however the work is usually contracted out to Windscreen specialist professionals (not Volvo Techs) who know how to remove these old windscreens carefully as they've done quite a few by now + at least 30% of the windscreen is already unstuck which makes the job that much easier according to the chap who did mine anyway.

It's the tensioner that was the offending part and the official Volvo recall due to premature failure (taking the main AUX belt out as it failed) so it's an absolute "no brainer" to get it done at the same time as the belts and as you say, it's not that expensive with only an additional few minutes of labour to swap it out. Pix below of when I did mine last summer. The old unit on the right is the OEM VOLVO recall replacement item which was done 5 years ago and despite still working fine, it was up on time & mileage so it got replaced
