A non starting diesel is usually very easy to diagnose with the right equipment - 99 time out of 100 it is either low fuel pressure in the HP rail (which could be fuel pump) or no injector pulse, which could be a sensor or other electrical issue.

Personally I would take it to a dealer or Volvo indie for diagnosis with Volvo compatible diagnostics, that might cost say £100-£150 but it will be far cheaper in the long run than swapping parts on a "poke and hope" basis.

I say a Volvo garage, because if it is an electrical issue, their equipment will find it. A non specialist garage without Volvo gear will tell you it's electrical but likely not what, so you will only end up going to Volvo anyway and paying twice...

I have had a very similar problem to you and this is my account. Although my car is now rather old I have never needed breakdown assistance until last summer when like you my car failed to start despite turning over as usual. I left it overnight and next day the breakdown service attended and with me sitting in the car and trying to start it he gave a few sprays of easy start which after a few attempts got the car started. I was told it was an air lock and all was fine but after a few weeks the same thing happened again but I kept trying to start it and after a few turns it started. I had changed the fuel filter a few thousand miles ago but I had kept the older one so I put the older one back on. All has been fine (touch wood) since then. Maybe because I used a non Volvo filter it had triggered the problem, maybe there is some type of sensor that senses a diesel flow problem. I did check to see if there was any leakage around the fuel filter housing but it was very dry.
