Default correct alloy wheels

It appears my wheels (in photo) are not the original ones fitted to a 1985 GLT? Does anyone know if that is definitely the case these wouldn't have been an option at the time of sale & would there have been an option of 14" & 15"? These mags are 14" with very high tyres.

Also does anyone know what these wheels are called?

I would like to find 5 near mint wheels, of this type. And if these are not the originals then 5 near mint virgo alloys also.

I would use one for summer & one set for winter tyres.

hi
as a new member myself. i hope i am just about to get a 240. so i have been looking and have seen these wheels on other 240 so maybe its an add on from new.
i have a tyre and wheel Q`s someone may be able to answer. i an not a low profile fan. so if i get my 240 what the biggest tyre i can put on the rim. i ask this as i saw a 240 in traffic last week and it had what seemed huge tyres on standard alloys.

Being old, I can remember the early 240GLTs and certainly the estates used to have Corona alloys as fitted to your car - albeit most I seem to remember had closed in (via a cap) wheel nuts.

Not sure when they changed over to Virgos - which I have a set of if you'd like a swap : )

185/70/14 is what Ruby is running, the handling is impeccable, tight with no roll at all.
The GLT rides them very well but tall gearing, not sure i'd want them on a DL though due to different suspension/lack of power.

Stuart
I will get these refurbed or buy some mint corona ones if someone has some for sale. Only would've wanted virgo's if these wheels were not correct for originalities sake. thanks for info

There were 2 types of finish I believe on Coronas. Either silver painted all over or painted with the front upper face polished and clear lacquered.

The latter looks really nice until the lacquer lifts.

Best of luck.

These are Coronas on mine:

I think the wheels without the nut covers went by a different name, even though they were effectively the same?
They were on early GLTS, 70's models and also on GLE models of that era.
Not sure when the Virgos became 'the norm' for GLT's, but certainly my old 82' GLT had them.

So your 85' GLT would have had Virgo's as standard so either the Coronas you have were specified by the 1st keeper, or sometime during its life a swap has been done.
I am a sucker for adding a pic to a post

PS: my Coronas are an 'add on' by me to replace the original plastic trimmed 'steelies' that GL's came with and which keeps to 14" 'originality'.

I don't know about the wheels with the hubcaps: but the wheels - with exposed nuts on the maroon car - are Corona's.

I've just sold a set of five that were bought new (have reciept) by a relative when he bought his new 245DL (now in my stable).

They were quite expensive in 1989!

Coronas are 14", Virgos are 15", from the factory with stock size tyres the roling radius would be the same, oherwise the speedo reading would be out on one or the other. A Glt on Virgos and Standard size tyres are by no means low profile, i feel the roll in he tyres, i can imagine it being even worse on 14"s, but then thats just my opinion.
