The blokes at my local garage, who I respect, say these days YUASA.

When you go to a battery supplier they indicate the type/size of battery for your specific car. 027 was for my 1993 940 2.0 turbo.

Hang on a mo ... I'll pop me bonnet.
...
I was running for years on a no-brand wrong sized one which died from a dying alternator. I was stuck at home so ordered one online from AutoSessive (terrible name)

YBX5 027

It was delivered to my door next morning for £66, I call that a result!
Been great.

I find genuine Volvo last a long time and the latest ones include a carry handle that makes getting them in and out of the battery tray easier.

That said, one of my 940s has gone through the winter without a hitch using a Yuasa battery that came with it in 2011.

I occasionally use a Ctek smart charger to keep the batteries conditioned, especially in the cars I don’t use so frequently.

My trusted indie fitted a Yuasa to the 740 and it's been fine so far. Despite mostly local use and some long lay-ups, seems to hold its charge and start the car!

Exide heavy duty here.
I have run the battery dead flat several times, my fault, but it charged right back up and starts in the deepest winter despite being left a week at a time between use.

I swear by the Bosch silver range but don't pay silly prices for them, shop around

My mechanic always uses/recommends Yuasa also, had it in my last car and it performed brilliantly.

Exclamation Battery for a 940

The reason I posted my original question was be cause I've had a lot of problems with HALFORDS, Last January the cars original battery was getting past its best, so I went to Halfords for a new battery, they advised a YUASA SILVER 5000, great a new battery, or so I thought, over the last few months the battery kept loosing its charge, I suppose its because the car does not get used much, but still annoying when you need it and the batteries flat, it turns out that the YUASA battery a CALCIUM based battery needs 14.4V to 14.8V to keep it topped up, the alternator on my 940 at best produces 14V, so over the period of time my alternator was working overtime to try and keep the battery topped up, in the end the alternator got worn out, so I now have a new alternator and a new HBO13 LEAD ACID BATTERY as fitted originally, so although I thought the YUASA battery was great, it turned out in the long term not to be the case. David.

Best I would say genuine Volvo and you will not go wrong. Bosch used to make them for Volvo, not sure if that is still the case.

Halfords ones make sure you change it every year under the warranty. Less hassle to buy something better and will last
