Default V60, D5 Hybrid, Charing problems

Hi there,
I picked up this 2016, V60, D5 Hybrid second-hand. I got some funny thing going on after charging. I pug the car into a normal 220v sucket. It charges ok, but it is impossible to disconnect the charging cable from the car. According to VolvoOnCall I need to luck and unlock the car seven times. It works. When done, I can disconnect the charging cable. My local Volvo dealer has tested the car and found everything to be in order. The fault is consistent, every time I use the cable that came with the car, it is impossible to disconnect. Like it is magnetic attached to the car. Any ideas?

This will sound like child's play, but I always follow this sequence to the letter !:
1) Unlock the car.
2) Plug the cable into your 3 pin socket.
3) Switch on your 3 pin plug socket and wait 5 seconds
4) Plug into car
5) Lock car and charge
6) Unlock car twice.
7) Remove cable from car socket.
8) Switch off 3pin plug socket.I

The only issue I've had with 'the magnet' is if I plug it into the car before switching on at the mains...and I don't use the preconditioning timer.

So you think it is "as designed". Or another Swedish safety option?

I tried to follow your order of activities to charge the V60. Sadly I got the same fault. The car will only release the charging cable after it is locked and unlocked seven times.

Definitely a fault. Process of elimination - car, cable, or power supply issue.

I'd go back to the Volvo dealer and stand your ground. Have they another cable they can lend you to plug in at home then you'll know it's not the cable.

Then they can check the car itself again.

I have two questions for you:- 1) At home are you using a 3 pin plug or a wallbox; 2) Have you tried plugging in at a neighbours.

If it's a Volvo dealer they need to prove its working to you, which it isnt! My other thought is to look where the car has been serviced previously and see if they have anything on record.

Virginia Water to York is a bit far, otherwise you could borrow my cable !

If Volvo on call recognised the problem and already knew the workaround to tell you, then they must surely know the cause.

I agree. They would not give me the cause or possible cause. Just ask me to contact a Volvo dealer.

I am using a regular extension lead, not a wall box. I have tried a friend's sucket with the same fault. The fault is consistent, not random.

The fault did not happen at the dealer. I saw that myself.

So, continuing the process of elimination, it's not your power source but could still be your cable (unlikely) or (probably) your car.

Have you asked the Volvo garage to either lend you a cable, or use your cable to charge one of their cars that are suitable for charging ?

You haven't said if Volvo supplied the car and/or if you have a warranty,.

hi Mogle,
Firstly drop the extension if possible - it is highly not recommended and may cause some problems with errors popping on the charger.

re the red light on the car and impossibility of taking the cable off the car - I had this problem but in the winter when temperatures dropped below -4C. (have not heard about 7 on/off thing so many thanks!). I thought it was because of the cold but usually after about 30 min of waiting and opening again all was ok.
This makes me think now if this 7 on/off method is some kind of reset that automatically revers the locking bolt?

however I experienced the red light today without any obvious reason but it turn out pretty soon that a slug fried inside the socket (!!!). after all was cleaned and fuse replaced all worked fine again.

good luck!

Default V60 PHEV Charging Red Light

Hi All, I'm brand new to this forum and Volvo ownership! Tacking this onto this thread as while not exactly the same issue it is related, so will be found by similar search.

I also picked up a 2016 V60 D5 Twin Engine, just last week. Has been charged once using the 'granny charger' and a couple of times using the Type2 cable connected to an EO home charging point, and to a Rolec fast charger at work. All good, green lights in charging port etc. So two different cables and three different sockets.

The car has been unplugged for a few days while I've been off work and the wife has been using the wall charger to keep the Ampera topped up.

Went to charge the V60 today using the 3 pin charger and, lo, after a couple of minutes I got the red light. Initially the fans etc came on, but eventually that all stopped. Tried to use the wall charger with Type 2 cable and the same happened.

I tried the 'unlock 7 times' thing to see if that does some kind of reset but no dice. No issues removing the cable once car unlocked.

Car is from a Volvo dealership so I'll be onto them, but does anyone have any additional thoughts as to what the problem might be? Given both cables have worked previously and now neither does, points to the car. But why would it just stop working? Could it just be the car has got too hot sitting in full sun for five days? Car does start up OK.

Supposed to be taking the car up to Scotland over the weekend so hoping to still be able to use it.
