Default Auto Gear lever, not releasing

S40 1.8
MY2002
AW55-50/51sn 5 speed auto box. B4184s2
110k miles,
Fluid "redish" (not brown/black)
only an occasional "bump" when cycling All the gears when cold, only an occasional "bump" 2-3 when sub 1 mile driven cold.

Start engine as normal (foot on foot brake, hand brake on (or off)
poss 2, wait for lights, then crank, starts instantly, wait for the rest of the lights to go out, with foot still on foot brake.
Pull the gear lever lock button >
unable to move gear lever from "P" as the lock button wont move enough
Press "shift lock" with engine running and holding the lock button on lever > moves, allows all gears to be selected, and "P" , gear lever lock button works untill you turn the engine off with it in "P" again,
key out,

key in, start > gear lever lock button "locked" again untill "shift lock" pressed.

ive pulled the "top" off the gear lever itself, seen the mech from the button and its free to move when Off the car.
Reseated to the gear lever, Exactly the same,
When the lock button works you can hear a Very feint "click" coming from the dash/clocks area , when it remains "locked" no clicks.

any ideas where/what i should be stripping out and seeing to ?

Andy.....

get out the WD 40 & spray into Button Hole (so its runs down INSIDE the Gear lever) ....There is a Huge lump of CRUD at the bottom of the lever (The WD40 will remove this)

VERY COMMON fault on "Our" cars Mate .. I've had to do mine TWICE in 12 Months!!!

the lever/lock mech in the "bit that comes off in your hand" is clean/clear and moves nicely, this "lump o crud" is down the Bottom of the gear shaft?

Hello andy.....just from the top of my head as it is quite a while since i had the auto 960 but the click you can hear maybe a switch on top of the brake pedal as this and another three things have to be ok before you can either start or engage a gear to go.....it is Volvo`s safety mode so you cannot start the car and it will go forward to run someone over or whatever.....have a look for a switch under there and either lubricate with WD or replace also have a search on www.brickboard .com under RWD faults.....hope this helps you?...

thankies both

yes there is a three level interlock on these,
the brake pedal switch , which conspires with a micro switch on the lever asm.
a cable to the ign barrel to block/allow the release of the key Only when in "P" (working thank gawd)
the "P" setting also allows engine start, (as does "N") ,

ill be WD40 on the lever/lock button, head upside down in the footwell checking the brake switch /connections , and stripping out the center console to check the micro switch/connections , And pulling the head off the knob, cleaning and rechecking the lock button itself.

Just Odd that it starts engine fine , and then Wont let me move the stick, without "shift lock",, maybe i should look around the connectors / switch that interfaces with ?

im suspecting the silly hot temps we have had of late have made the lube runny and flow, either into/out of where its needed/not wanted ?

...as you say , do the easy bit first all around the gearstick......you have just reminded me about that cable to the barrell as well i think i need some WD40 in my brainbox as it is getting a bit sticky......the thing is if you don`t use it you lose it and all these rare things crop up and drive you balmy!.....

it was your prompting me about the 3+ things interlock that snagged the cable release for key in my "grey soup".

i swear this car has a "thing" for odd / strange faults , tho in its defence it Did do the common 1.8 volvo trick of eating its VVT.
