Differences between the 136 and the 140 2.0?
Any ideas on how to ID the exact engine in a '97 2.0 CD S40? If I'm not mistaken they made a 136BHP and a 140BHP variant for the 2.0, but that's all I could find on that. What are the differences between the two anyway?
Thanks!

On a 97 plate car it will be the older one. The later engine was 99 or 2000 when fitted. Mine is a 98 2.0 and it is the older engine too.
The difference is variable valve timing or something such, makes a fair difference by all accounts, particularly at low revs. |

...the 2001 model is the 136bhp and it should say B4204 S2 on the cam cover this model has the dreaded VVT...with less bhp!!! ...i believe the inlet valves are slightly larger on the `97 engine as this is the cylinder head tuners use to get the absolute ultimate out of the turbo motor apart from this one the heads are all the same, so this must account for the extra 4bhp and without VVT...

OK, here's the spec sheet for both engines:
Aside from the added economy, they seem to output the same 0-62 times and top speed. I couldn't find anything regarding the Torque for the newer 136 though, perhaps it's more then the 140 which could explain the matched performance...

...the compression ratio of the 1997 is 10.5 to 1 ...the comp.ratio of the 2001 2ltr is 10.3 to 1 ...all the gearbox ratio`s including the Final Drive are of a different ratio as well, the `97 engine is a more revving engine and you may well fine that on the move acceleration say from 20 to 50mph the older motor would be quicker, whatever the weather you cannot substitute Brake Horse Power which is reflected in the more economy of the newer model......
