Default Egg Smell but emmisions and exhaust ok??!!

Hope somebody can help?!!

(S40, 2.0D, 2005, 91k)
Last few weeks had an egg smell in my car and initially treated it with and air con cleaner at the weekend. Don't know whether i'm imagining it but i seem to feel a bit nauseous after driving in the car although yesterday i didn't when i drove the car under 1500rpm (not invoking turbo)

Smell persisted so booked car into garage to be checked this morn. They found no exhaust leaks and emission levels where very good. They got me a price for a new catalytic converter (£881 fitted) but said one mechanic was reluctant over this and still thought it was air con related because no exhaust leaks and emissions test was good. The smell is evident with or without AC on when driving or changing gears over 1500rpm.

Was going to try house carbon monoxide detector in the car tonight but other than that i'm at a dead end now! Anybody got any ideas?

Would it be anything to do with fuel? I've used VPower Diesel since owning car but now this has switched to VPower Nitro?!

Thanks in advance

It won't be fuel problem. What was the brand of air con cleaner? Some work and some don't. We've used a few and by far the best one was the Wurth air con bacterial cleaner (single cans available on ebay-one can per treatment).

Failing that, it could be the catalyser which has broken up inside.
