V70 rear antiroll bar bush replacement
The rear antiroll bar on my V70 D5 is knocking, due to the rubber bushes needing replacement.
As is usual, Volvo's advice is to buy a complete roll bar at around £200. So I bought some new bushes from Latvia for £16. We took the bolts out of the hangers, expecting the two "U" shaped parts of the hanger to come apart. They didn't seem to want to come apart, and my engineer thought they were bonded together and didn't want to start wellying it with a chisel and hammer until we found out how other people solved the apparent problem. So can someone please advise if they will come apart, or how they resolved it. Thanks |

You'll probably need to burn the old rubber bush off with a propane torch. Well, that's what I did when replacing the front roll bar bushes.

I has a similar issue with the rear ARB bushes on an e-class Merc.
Heating the ARB bracket with a hot air gun until the bush began to smoke enabled me to pull the bracket off with a pair of grips, and then cut the bush with a sharp knife. Use a sheet of bacofoil to shield the floorpan from localised heat. Clean the ARB and paint with rustproofer and hammerite etc, prior to fitting new bushes.

Keep us informed mate...I'm doing mine shortly with those Latvian bushes,But I also have a spare ARB in my back garden to practice on,before I start ripping my car apart.

No not bonded together - just tricky to get apart. I can't remember exactly how I did mine except that it took a lot of force and time.
I was forced by an MOT failure into replacing a bush on a silent anti roll bar. Fitted one of the 'Latvian' bushes, passed it's MOT and now makes a hell of a racket. Such is life. |

Well,I bought a S/H bar and I thought I would just swap it over, not a chance....its a bit of a pain and you have to take most of one side of the suspension to get it off and my car was off the road for a night as I couldn't get one of the suspension arm bolts lined up. I did it the next day,,but realized that the exhaust has got to be dropped so I didn't bother swapping the ARB over. Mine aren't that bad to be honest, but I'm chasing a rattle around and thought that was it. ( it Wasn't! ) I'm gonna have a look at the brackets to see how they come apart and practice a few times so I can just bolt them straight on. Oh for poly ARB bushes......

Thanks for all the help, and I'm pleased to say all the hints helped me to crack it.
It's not as difficult as I feared. The first thing to realise is that the two U-brackets aren't fixed or welded together, but have a locating lug on the outside bracket which fits inside the bolt hole of the inner bracket. After removing the support bolt, separate the two brackets by hammering a screw driver between the two brackets, the outer one will open a bit and drop off. The second thing is that the rubber bush is still on the ARB and needs to be cut off, although it isn't straight forward as it's vulcanised in a couple of spots to the bar. I used a stanley knife to remove it in bits. The next thing is cut the new bush and replace it in the brackets. Your first thought might be "this will never fit", but it does, it just needs some compression. I fitted the bush into the brackets by using a vice and left it overnight. It didn't recover it's size, and almost allowed refitting to the car. Not quite, though, and I had to get it in line with the support bolt hole by using a jack to push it up, and a hammer to nudge it sideways until the bolt slides all the way through. Tightening the bolt makes the lugs relocate properly. It hasn't stopped the knocking, but I've the second one to do, but it holds no fears. Thanks again |

These were 19mm, but it's worth just checking. Just measure the diameter of the ARB, it's parallel under the bush.
