2.0T to 2.4 T5 - How difficult?
Please do not suggest "easier to by a T5" because I wouldn't find a T5 with the same spec/colour/age as my 2.0T... I really like my car and want to run it into the ground, but I need that 2.4 T5 engine in my life. I could buy a 2.5T with a matching spec, but they split their liners when tuned.
I have the newer 'revised' 2.0T engine with both Exhaust and Intake VVT Cams, which I believe is the same setup as the later 2.4 T5. Has anybody been successful with engine swaps on these cars? Over on Swedespeed, some say the engine will actually run on the original ECU (although very rough) so will need a custom T5 map.. Others say you have to swap literally everything over including the ECU and "its not worth it" etc. Thoughts? Last edited by T5R92011; Oct 11th, 2017 at 21:05. |

The mechanical hardware should all be easily doable by comparison but I would say that it's an
ECM/software/electronic minefield. I would begin by finding someone who really knows their stuff in that area and get guarantees from them if they're confident but I honestly can't see a happy or cost effective ending. I couldn't fit an SRS module on a potential purchase without massive expense so an ECM will be worse.

I've thought about this as well. The route I'd considered to get around the ecu issue was to swap just the engine block, crankshaft, pistons etc. I think I saw somewhere that the stroke is the same as the 2.0T just the bore is bigger.
It'll only work if the heads are the same, including valve diameters and lift but it might work. I'll stand back and watch, you do it and if it works I might do mine |

Have you tried putting in some blue injectors getting your car remapped. It made quite a difference to mine.

Just comparing the stats on the two engines:
B5244T5 (2.4 T5) The B5244T5 is a 2.4 L (2,401 cc) straight-five. Bore is 81 mm (3.2 in) and stroke is 93.2 mm (3.7 in) with a compression ratio of 9.0:1. It is turbocharged and intercooled with a power output of 260 PS (191 kW; 256 hp) at 5500 rpm with 350 N⋅m (260 lb⋅ft) of torque at 2100 rpm. It features VVT for both intake and exhaust cam. It is equipped with a BorgWarner K24 turbocharger. B5204T5 (2.0T) The B5204T5 is a 2.0 L (1,984 cc) straight-five. Bore is 81 mm (3.2 in) and stroke is 77 mm (3.0 in) with a compression ratio of 9.5:1. It is turbocharged and intercooled with a power output of 180 PS (132 kW; 178 hp) at 5300 rpm, and produces 240 N⋅m (180 lb⋅ft) of torque at 2000–5300 rpm. I know that my late 2.0T has VVT for both intake and exhaust like the 2.4 T5... Perhaps a block swap etc is the way to go to avoid computer trouble. You know where it gets to the point that you've spent so much on maintaining your car anyway, that you might as well just keep it and do something stupid with it?! |

Daft question but .... do you have to change anything but the crank??? In the 70's the 1485cc Austin Maxi was stroked out to 1748cc with no more than a crank change. Ok times change, but would Volvo make a dedicated 2.0 litre block/pistons etc. if they did not have to, that's a lot of needless expense don't you think?
Additionally Austin then added two extra cylinders to the 1485cc to make the 2227cc engine for the Landcrab and Princess models. Cheers Bob |

I think you might need new rods and pistons to avoid clashes and the compression ratio being too high

Why not buy a T5 then do a bare shell swap?
Back in the hot hatch 90s it was possible with a citroen ax/ saxo VTS.... granted before the CAN bus days!
