Default Euro 4 D5 - VNT and swirl flap motors

Hi All,

I've been chasing persistent fault codes on my friend's Euro 4 D5 for quite a while now. It's a long story, but I have three questions at present:

1) I presume that when you actuate the "Boost control motor (PWM)" (or similarly titled) "Activation" in VIDA, the VNT motor arm should move, and failure to do so would indicate a failed motor and/or a wiring issue.

2) Would a stuck VNT mechanism cause any strange acoustic effects; specifically something which sounds like a boost leak? There may also be a boost leak (I have yet to try my shiny new 'proper' leak test kit on it), but initial attempts with an improvised leak test kit didn't find any (but the pressure may have been too low).

3) Is it normal for the swirl flap motor to report "654%" opening at rest? It reports a sensible position otherwise. I have recalibrated it. Faulty internal position sensor?

Finally, I'm alarmed by how much rust there is underneath this 09MY car. I am going to have to go at some sections of it with a flap wheel sooner or later. Volvo really did drop the ball with the P3s in terms of underbody protection. My 13MY V70 looks grottier underneath (mainly bracketry so far, thankfully) than the 03 P2 V70 I had as a stand-in recently. Large chunks of my 50 year old 164 are better than either of the P3s!

cheers

James

The activations and advanced tests available in Vida vary between engine versions and model years so what you've seen/heard of being done on others may not apply to your case.

Whatever is shown for the specific connected car is the function that's available.

Single click on the function, read the description then do the function and compare the result.

Even without Vida connected when revving the engine, if boost is building you should be able to see the actuator moving.

Thanks!

This was partly a sanity check - the title of the activation didn't seem to exactly tally with what I'd call it (not that that's unknown, in my experience with VIDA, and even the in-car descriptions!). Long story short, I haven't yet had chance to observe whether or not the motor is moving with the engine running (that involves having heatshields off, etc), but it's a fair point to add to the list.

I haven't noticed any notes for functions in VIDA, but I will take another look.

cheers

James

It's greyed out bottom left on the various tabs (Parameters, Advanced etc.) in >Diagnostics >Vehicle Communication >Selected Module from the overhead vehicle diagram.

Single click on a function and Description becomes available to explain the various values and options.

Ahh...I have a feeling that I tend to miss those links right along the bottom, as they're a scroll-down away on my VIDA laptop's screen, by default. I should probably use it in full-screen mode!

cheers

Full screen and scale the page % in Internet Options if necessary.
No point working without all available information.

Yup, I was just thinking of full-screen mode.

I normally only pay attention to it when scrolling to find the delete codes option...!

cheers

On my 08 we tested the turbo actuator with engine off and you can hear it move.

Thanks! Fingers crossed a friend has found a working motor, so we might be in luck.

Any thoughts on the question about acoustic effects, anyone?

cheers

James
