Have a read of www.tyrereviews.co.uk
Alternatively have a look at the reviews in AutoExpress. I think they share their test data with other European magazines (which are on the 'tyrereviews' website).
My wife runs Continental TS850 on her Panda Cross. I run Nokian Weatherproofs on my XC60.
Other top brands widely recommended are Goodyear and Michelin.

Nokian or Vredestein do a winter or all season, used both and they are great.

I read a review of a winter car test (either American or German but not British) and the cars that performed best all seemed to be fitted with Pirelli SottoZero II's. I've fitted them to mine and they seem better than my previous Vredestein Wintrac Xtreme's. The only caveat I have is that I'm running 245/40R18 which is hardly an ideal size for winter tyres.

Consider these:

We ran their predecessors on another light car (an MX5) and they were very good indeed. Great value, too, when compared to the premium brands.

From the same review:

Worth serious consideration.

Default Try Nokian Weatherproof

If available in your size.
Brilliant in low temps, snow, slush and wet.
Watched a neighbour in a Passatt battle to get out up the shared driveway over the weekend, then reversed my V70 out and set off with no trouble on the steepest part, in deep slush.
We often go away with the caravan early spring while the winter tyres are still on. Previous winters have feathered badly if the temperature rises but these are much better in that respect. Nokian market them as 4 seasons I believe, but are marked as suitable for winter use in the Alps. Highly recommended, but hard to find in UK.

Try Oponeo. Co. Uk

Agree ^^^. Not hard to find if you go to Oponeo, Mytyres or Blackcircles. Only slightly more expensive than 'premium summer' tyres.
