Default Handbrake Issue Solved

So like many others on here, for some time I have been struggling with the handbrake. I have followed all the advice and have still been left with poor handbrake performance. last weekend, I replaced both handbrake cables and on finding that I had still not resolved the issue, I got to thinking. Why was the system not taking up the slack?

I took apart the handbrake system where the cables terminate and found that the adjuster nut has a lock washer on it. Over the years, as people have tightened the system, the lock washer has gradually moved outwards, which means that when you adjust the nut, you are not moving the bush and peg that tightens the quadrant. I hope the pictures below explain. I moved the washer back into place and the secured with a small jubilee clip to stop it moving out again and hey presto.....perfick handbrakes
