If I start a long trip by coasting down the hill, my trip computer gives me fake high mpg results for the rest of the day. There is no point in anyone quoting mpg figures if they are believing that nonsense that shows up on the dash.
Not everyone lives on a big long hill.

Think you will find that most people will agree with you that you cannot accurately go by the trip computer to get exact figures, although I think you will find that the trip computer is not a million miles out either?

I know my trip computer is pretty accurate and certainly within 1 to 2mpg, even the estimated miles left in tank are approx within 10 to 15miles accurate over the space of a tank.

I've got three and a half years worth of accurate mpg figures and corresponding computer claims. Even when I've excluded the 'silly results' when tank obviously hadn't been quite filled etc I see a range of +7% to -7% discrepancy between the claims and real life. The average of all such individual tankfuls is that trip computer is 1.5% in error.

No idea how accurate the 'miles left' indication is - I've never actually let tank run dry and noted what it was saying a few seconds earlier. I generally refill when there's at least 50 miles showing and my impression is that the amount then required to fill tank is around a gallon short of full capacity but that's not something I record.

1.5% in error is not too bad, it is only there as a guide as is your fuel guage and fuel light. Certainly liveable with - for me anyway!

I would also agree that +7 to -7% would also be accurate and acceptable. Over all the different types of vehicles I driven over the years I've not found any manufacturers trip computers to be vastly more accurate from one to the other.

I only managed low to mid 50's on a long, clear motorway run when i had a V50 Drive SE Lux loaner last month. I've have high 40's from my T5 in similar situations so not especially impressive. Also had a D3 auto as a loaner and got high 40's on a motorway despite ragging it's nuts off.

Its all down to your sriving style and also if you use the cruise or not? I tend to find you can get a better MPG by using your own foot but in doing so leeds you to grow lead feed at the drop of a hat. I find to take the temptation way I use the cruise when I can really. Also in saying that if I'm feeling like I'm in the driving like a nutter mood then the covers come off the Evo and I go out in that lol.

On a long trip, I'd usually use CC - though I tend to set it for just a bit slower than I'd really want and boost that a little from time to time - e.g. when going downhill at an alleged 99mpg I'd probably speed up till mpg dropped to 90ish then let go again and use the extra momentum to go up the next hill. When right foot gets a bit tired, I'd potter along at CC's setting for a while.

CC is definitely an advantage when OH driving - but I haven't quite worked up the courage to tell her why !
