Default XC60 D4 Rear Pads/Discs

Main dealer serviced car in Feb (40,600 miles) with a recommendation that the rear discs and pad be replaced in 8-10,000 miles time.

Just dug out the paperwork and it says rear pads 90% worn, rear discs 60% worn.

Front pads 20% worn, discs 30% worn.

Gosh what a difference....

Is there any indication of when to replace rear pads - my old Focus had a wear indicator, anything like that on a Volvo?

I'm going on holiday at the end of July so probably best to get them done (I think the dealer mentioned about £450 for pads and discs....)

My D4 AWD needed rear pads at around 45k. The discs had plenty of life left for another set of pads. There's no were indicator - just a visual inspection required

I'd have a proper look at them with the wheels off as main dealers have been known to recommend pad/disc replacement when it's not required. I was told my V50 would need front pads soon at the 37.5k service. I checked and found plenty of life left - so much in fact that I got over 70k from the pads.

Even if they are required, I'd not pay main dealer prices. Brakes are important but also pretty simple so if you have any DIY capability you could do it yourself or just pay an independent garage

I just had my rear discs & pads replaced at 52,000 miles by Stoneacre Volvo Chesterfield at a cost of £354. Service report said discs below safe limit and pads 80% worn - fronts are fine.

Just having my 5th service (last of service pack) & dealer has called to say rear disc heavily lipped and pads need replacing (below legal limit and they assure me it would fail the MOT).
'Luckily' for me they have parts in and can do it now....over £400, reduced to £360 when I expressed my shock.

£201.60 of that is a labour cost - despite it only taking 1 hour

Frankly suspicious, but stuck (away on Friday with no time to sort independently), so no option but to pay up. Hey ho.

So the D4 has no indicator of pad wear, just visual checks?

On the bright side....off to the much more reasonably priced local specialist in future!

I replaced the rear discs and pads on mine a couple of weeks ago following guides on here and the ubiquitous YouTube.

I bought some Brembo discs and pads from Euro car parts for £94 in one of their recent 50% off promotions.

It was pretty straight forward, the most difficult bit was unplugging the connector for the electronic brake so I could wind it back with a battery but figured it out with the help of a neighbour.

Took about 2 hours but very satisfying once completed.

I've still got my rears to do. Bought replacement discs and pads months ago after the dealer told me they were all seriously worn back in February, however when I came to do the work only the fronts were anywhere near requiring replacement!

& this is where my distrust lies.
Hey ho: in reality, probably around £100 over what an indy would have priced up: I will take the lesson well learned!!

I've had to get up from the floor.....they sent me a "PlanMyService" quote.
Now be aware I bought this XC60 new with the bargain £500 5-year service plan.
Clearly that would not be matched.
but I DID fall off my chair when I saw how much they wanted for the next 5 years.
£2,552.72

Now, that may well include the MOT (£45 at my local place), but even then, an average of around £450 per service sounds....excessive!

Yes, you read this correctly....& that includes a generous 23.8% discount.

BWAAHAHAHAHAAAAA!

My local Leicester Indy will see a much smaller proportion of that for as long as I continue to enjoy the car......

They did mention the next might be a timing chain service....wonder how steep that jobbie is!?
