I know obviously, if I'm replacing it or removing it then they will be loose or off, so I put the VVT back on the cam gear finger tight. Then bolt the 55 torq bolt up with the timing marks aligned. Then fit the belt, torq up the 55 torq bolt to 88lbs ft and then tighten the three 10mm bolts????? If so, what should my starting position be for the VVT in relation to the cam gear??? Fully to the left? Fully to the right? The bolt slots are elongated to allow for adjustment but can not find any info on the correct procedure for adjusting it. If anyone out there knows, I would be incredibly grateful. My V70 is a 2001 model, 2.4 petrol automatic and it's a UK model.
Your VVT pulley looks rather different to the ones on our 4 cylinder engines.
When i put my VVT on my 1.8 v40, it couldn't be moved & appeared to have a rest/ default position before i fitted it !

What is your engine type? Is it B5xx4Tx, B5244S6, or B6xx4T? Looking at VIDA and the instructions are slightly different for each.

Ah pierremacalpine: You mentioned a new VVT has no timing marks etc. I've just purchased an AISIN device and it will be my next job (purring noise on idle). So are you saying to replace this "Any" position is acceptable? I dont need to change anything (belt, seals, tensioners etc) as they were done 20k previously (inc. VVT ALLEGEDLY!!) with the previous owner. 5W40 fully synthetic used at all times. Therefore it should be an easy quick swap? There is a "pin" visible in the VVT that must locate with something when it moves but I can't see what. I don't know whether it is a spring loaded VVT or not.

Are you sure it is the VVT? That seems like a lot of work to do based on a hunch. Correct the VVT can be put on any orientation. Does the noise go away when you unplug the VVT solenoid? If so then the problem is likely the VVT. If the noise does not stop you might want to look someplace else for the issue. Correct no need to replace anything else if you do decide that the VVT is defective. The pin orientation is irrelevant in fact some of suggested that the pin in itself is irrelevant.have you checked the solenoid for continuity? It is supposed to have somewhere around seven ohms.

The vvt is not the spring loaded type. All you do is install loosely and then tighten up the tensioner then fully tighten vvt and Bob's your uncle. Good luck keep us posted!

Default VVT & Cam Seals Replacement Instructions

I know this is an old thread, but I just wanted to say how grateful I am of Pierremcalpine for sharing his write-up. That is the best how-top write-up I have ever seen! What an outstanding job! I am sure many Volvo owners have benefited from this in the years since it was posted, and I am sure many more in the future to come. It's people like you that make the Volvo community so great! You inspire me to do my best to pass on whatever knowledge I may have to help others as well. Thank you!

Sincerely,

George

Great to hear that the instructions are still being put to good use, George. I take it you were successful in getting all this done? Assuming so, good on you. That is a lot of cash saved!

Default CAM Seals

pierremcalpine,

I am currently doing a lot more than this to my 2004 Volvo S40. I am pulling off the head to replace some leaky exhaust valves, and your write-up here helped me a lot with getting the CAMs off/on and aligned properly. There seemed to some confusing everywhere else about setting the VVT correctly. Some are spring loaded, some not, and my VVT sprocket doesn't even have any timing marks on it. So thanks again for your write-up!

Glad it helped you. Have you started the car back up yet?
