'Upspecing' my car - what will work? 2005 V70
Been offered some bits from a car being broken. My car is a basic plod spec T5 - no cruise, simple steering wheel etc.
So can I replace: 1. Manual air con control for auto one? 2. HU650* for the dolby HU850 (assume I would need the amp?) 3. If yes to the headunit upgrade would I need any additional speakers fitting? 4. Can I remove the telephone bit on a HU850 and put in the cup holder? 5. Steering wheel - would cruise control and/or radio controls work without reprograming? 6. Anything else worth having? Unfortunately no spoiler to be had! TIA! * Mine originally had a nasty aftermarket sterio in and I have fitted the HU650 and now have a 'check engine' message - I assume I cannot avoid this without a dealer reprogram? |

I've done 1 and 2 on my 02 S80 without issue. Both swapped straight over. Had to add the centre speaker and the amp under the drivers seat (and put a fuse in for the amp cos there wasn't one in the slot). The phone pad will swap for a cupholder alright.

1) Software may be required so would be expensive if its needed.
2) Yes, if you fit an amp then I think you need software for that part. 3) If you fit a dolby unit then you need the centre speaker. If the speakers in yours are basic ones, check what the breaker has and consider changing if they're a premium set. 4) Yes, check that the one you fit works, many are broken. Its a lot easier to do with the radio out. 5) Cruise, only with software which is expensive. Audio controls, possibly, depends if software already installed, can be installed but I'd guesstimate £50/£60 including time to download and install. 6) Any power seats? If the upholstery matches. They can have software but the basic settings will work just by plugging them in. Last edited by Missing Lincs; Apr 3rd, 2014 at 20:42. |

Should have said, with 1 and 2, its easy enough to test by trying the swap.

Thanks for responses so far - I assume my speakers will be lowest spec.
If there anything obvious I can look for to see if the broken car has upgraded speakers? |

It depends on what it is, some things like audio software are a few £, the labour charge to connect the car up and do this install is more than the price of the software, the rule seams to be that if you are fitting a physical upgrade and the software is to make it work, the software is cheaper, other things like Cruise Control are £100s, they charge as though you're buying a physical upgrade even though its only software.
If you go on one of the online US or European dealers' websites it will give you a rough idea of software costs even if you can't actually buy them online. |
