Hi Burgess,

OK thanks. It certainly would be much easier with the right tool, but I couldn't find one to fit my struts.

I think it was 7mm across the flats of the double D. I think the size varies between manufacturers.

Please let us know how you get on.

Thanks
Steve

Steve, I'm fitting Sachs gas shocks 635 66 0020, the double D is 6.1mm across the flats.

Looking in my tool box came across my drum brake adjuster wrenches, and light bulb moment. These wrenches have two square holes and the smaller wrench 1/4AF-5/16AF.
The ends have a slight off-set and are long enough to apply counter force to release/tighten the 15mm flanged nut.
Just need to round-out to 1mm deep at apposite ends of the 1/4 hole to accommodate the double D.

Lots of them on on ebay, I've sent for another and will show photos after modification.

Hi Burgess

Now that the old struts are off (they look original) , I have measured them more exactly and I would say that the double d is 6.1mm across the flats and 7.25 across the Ds.

The 6.1 x 8.0 tool might have worked, but it is not an exact fit.

The replacement struts from my spares pile (Alko brand) are Double D 4.85mm x 7.05mm
What a nightmare! Maybe I wont fit them until I have the right counterhold.

(4.85mm = 3/16 inches)

The idea of using a Dremel on some brake adjusting spanners seems like a good one.

I've done the mod to the brake adjuster tight fit on the shock absorber rod end, and it will still be useable for adjusting brakes. Just need the 15mm off-set ring spanner to arrive.
I've got BSF, BSW, AF, deep off-set spanners, but no metric,
so I've set for a 6-17mm set.

Came across these ratchets for refrigeration technicians: from MGF Plumbing Tools:
Ratchet for compressors, reversible square, four sizes 3/16", 5/16", 1/4" and 3/8".
There not expensive and there's enough stock in the rotor to dress-out to form two D ends.

Hi, regarding the C70 cabrio rear shock absorbers, can you tell me the thread size and length of the two flange screws securing the top support plate to the body, and the thread size of the flange dome nut securing the damper to the trailing arm, please.

Hi Burgess

The orginal flanged screws are 38mm overall of which 30mm is threaded (and the rest is the hex head and the flange). Part number 985188

I cannot find my taps and dies which would let me confirm the thread gauge, but it is a standard metric size. I would guess M8x1.25mm pitch

I think I bought my stainless screws here
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/150927041999
and that I went for the 30mm not the 40mm because the 38mm seemed to be much longer than necessary.

I dont have anything to use as a gauge for the lower acorn nut (part number 985906).

Parts diagram here
https://www.volvopartswebstore.com/s...roduct=1177854

Those parts are not very expensive from Volvo.

HTH

Thank you for the informative response. I obtain a wide range of fasteners from Key's on ebay.
Volvo-parts-web-store actual photos of parts, better than VIDA.
The acorn flanged nuts are 18mm across the flats, same as the
flanged nuts on the McPherson strut-to-knuck flanged bolts which are M12s.

New nuts, washers, and bolts, now on order with Volvo on Anglesey.
I'll zinc plate them prior to fitting.

I've finally managed to fit the rear suspension struts on to the car today.
I had made a tool to hold the top of the suspension shaft

1 M10x50mm A2 SS flanged bolt,
1 M10 flanged nut,
1 M10 half nut,
1 M10x30mm stud joiner.

Run the half nut and stud joiner on to the bolt.
Lock off when 5mm of bolt thread protrudes.
Cut a 6x5mm slot in the end of the bolt.
Ensure this is a tight fit on the shock absorber shaft end.
Unlock and remove the stud joiner.
Run the half-nut up the bolt to just under the head.
Fit a 17mm off-set ring spanner onto the half nut.
Run the M10 flanged nut onto the bolt, flange towards the head.
Orientate the slot to the spanner shaft and lock-off the flange nut.
Run the stud-joiner onto the bolt until flush with the end of the bolt and lock-off against the flange nut.
I used an off-set 17mm Silverline spanner, the ring being 6.6mm deep.
If I'd possessed ratchet ring spanners, I would've used one.

I've removed both original stove-nuts and used new ones when fitting the struts.

I used a metre length of 12mm od plastic tubbing pushed down through mount and pushed onto the shock absorber shaft. This helped guide the shaft up into the mount plate.

I'm trying to up load photos, with no sucess...

If you are trying to upload photos from your files and then failing, most probably the photo is too large. The limit on size is quite small and I find I have to resize all my photos before they will upload. Also any portrait photos have to be small height wise or they will flip over on to their side when uploading.
