Default Volvo extended Warranty

Hi just wondering if anyone has tried to extend the standard Volvo three year warranty? My XC60 is just coming up to three years, enquired at the dealership
(Marshall’s Nottingham) today after my service and MOT and was offered a 1 Year Volvo Selekt warranty for £500 (seems a bit steep). Looking on Volvo UK site it looks as if only one year extensions are on offer but no prices given. Was hoping to extend for two years.

I took out a two year extended warranty through my Volvo dealer (Holdcroft, Stoke on Trent) on my V90 D4 at the three year old point in November 2019.

I had previously checked the Volvo website for a cost but could only find a one year extension for around £385, payable monthly if required. Holdcroft did a two year extension for £745 so slightly cheaper overall. There was sadly no monthly payment option so I paid up front for the warranty.

It may be worth re-checking with Marshalls as they ought to be able to offer a two year extension. Hope this helps?

Paul

Thanks Paul, sounds a better deal than Marshall’s might try a quote from Warranty Wise they seem to get good reviews. You would think Volvo themselves would offer a fixed price two year extension if they have confidence in their cars.

My dealers advise, put the money in a jar. Then you have a sum of money towards ANY repair nessesary. If none are needed you can put that money towards you holidays or whatever else you want.

At the time of asking it was £750 to extend the limited volvo select warranty.

Put the cost into an easy access ICA and save some tax on the interest if you are a taxpayer. It's there if you need it and earning you, admittedly not a lot, interest if not.

Like all insurance, it's a bargain if it pays out more than you pay in. How many of us need to claim though.
This is one instance where money in the pot make far more sence to me.

Paul.

Ooof! £750.00

There's no way I'd pay that on a 3 year old car, you'd probably find the Warranty doesn't cover you for major items like the clutch etc anyway.

I'd say treat the car with care, increase the amount of oil changes going forward and plan your own maintenance schedule to iron out problems before they arise.

I've had my 2005 car from when it was just under 4 years old and I've never had an unexpected failure that would've had me phoning the warranty company.

I'd say the only time a warranty is worth it is during those first few months of ownership where you inherit the previous owners issues, then if you're lucky the car dealer will cover the repair but buying a warranty on a car you already own just seems a waste.

I think with more modern cars people worry less about the engine & more about the clever electronic bits. Replacing things that cars didn't have 15 years ago can be expensive. I have a local garage that I trust for the oily bits but I doubt they have the equipment or knowhow to work on Sensus system or whatever.

I do understand what you mean there, it's a fair point.

Something that does develop though in the background is independent tech companies developing fixes for ECU's and touchscreens etc once a failure pattern develops.

It's a bit like those ABS modules that used to be replaced at great cost but can also be sent to a specialist to dissect and replace components on the PCB etc for a fraction of the cost.

I remember everyone panicking about electric handbrakes and you can now work on them yourself by following a YouTube guide etc.

I suppose with new cars that have camera's and city-safe stuff you could need the reassurance of a warranty going forward.

You think £500/£750 is steep? Jaguar asks £1200 per year for extra warranty! That does include body work and alloy repairs as much as you like, but still!!!

Back in the day I took a volvo 2yr extended warranty on a volvo select car. Best thing I ever did.
Virtually rebuilt my V70 AWD R LOL...Have a list somewhere but included Bevel gear. Also clutch+ DMF - following slave cylinder failure, 2 @ 4C shocks, and some electrical gubbins in the rear that required said gubbins to be relocated which required a new loom!.
Do read the full T&C. Items you think are covered may not be.- make yourself a list of fiction "failures" esp. electronic components- how many are covered??
At end of day you pays your money, or takes a chance....

Cheers
Bob
