Motor Auctions

Anyone know t motor auctions are good places to sell Bricks? I am looking to sell my 960 estate (see other post) and to be honest I'm not that bothered about getting loads for it as it's not wortht the hassle.

Failing that if someone wants to come see it and make me an offer I'll consider it. It's available early November (new car coming then).

It all depends on the year , make , model and condition of your "brick", people go to auctions to pick up a relatively cheap bargain, so unless you go on a day when there might be 4 or 5 people bidding on your car you may have to end up letting the car go for a lot less than it is worth and you will still have to pay the auctioneers commission fee.
Try posting your car for sale here on the forum with pictures, you never know.........

In my opinion auctions are not the place to go for 'quality but old' volvo sales.
Where are you? What is the milage? Give us some picks..... if I can get to you I will make you an offer.

If the car has any faults (and trust me it will - I am on my third 960) then the best price you will get for it will be here or on Ebay (but pro ebayers seem to be ruining that one).

Hi mate, i will look to take a load of pictures at the weekend. As far as i know the car has no problems at all except for it's thirst but hey, don't we all.

I bought two Volvos recently from eBay, a '94 850 est in very good condition and a '96 960 estate in good condition, both bargain prices. I could not class my self as a 'pro ebayer', this is the first time I have ever bought a car from any auction. By the way, I bought both unseen

Not really the right place for a rant so appologise to all forum users.

Ebay used to be a place - like auto trader before it - where honest sellers could find a good home for there much loved cherished wreck. What I ment when I said pro ebayers have ruined it is that by selling junk for a margin they have driven down the prices of good cars.

I too have bought a good car on ebay -sold by a 'one off' seller - but I have also been sold some lemons by blatant pro/semipro traders trying to sell up a car which has issues hidden by all the old tricks. Such tricks include listing a few minor faults -like an honest joe - and then stating that that is all the issues they are 'aware' of while knowing full well that the car is suffering terminally.

I and many of my peers don't buy from ebay now and so good potential customers have been driven away....

A good rule in life is 'never ever ever trust someone who sells cars for a living'. What ebay does for the professional car seller is gives them selling space from which the buyer - dispite what ebay say - has no protection under the trades description act, no right to refund, representation et al. An environment which is created to protect a paying seller often gives the unscrupulous professional the remit to lie and extort an otherwise straight forward transaction.

Like I said - they ruined ebay for the rest of us!

well this is my experiance, there was a blue 940 SE 2.3 turbo saloon in BMA (Bridlington) it had one of those signs in the window with £995 on it FSH, and as imaculate as you like and had under 90k on it was owed by a doctor from new and it was traded into a garage for a newer car, nect the forcourts price tag on it of the 995. i walked out of there with it for £150. admitedly this was about 4 or 5 years ago, when i 1st started driving.

I have bought a few minor things, books, CD's cables etc off e_bay and sold a few similar bits too. The only motorised item was my motorbike last year, a bargain at £2200.
I regularly look at cars on e_bay but am VERY reluctant to bid without seeing it and as I live so far from everywhere I usually drop out. I am sure there are loads of bargains to be had but similarly there are a few people who are "had" with a lemon. There are so may cars listed as sold then return a fortnight later.........
A few weeks ago there was a specialist sports car which was B-I-N for around £4450, the seller offered to sell it without the engine & gearbox for £3000. Now I know he bought it a couple of month earlier for no more than £2750 as that is what it was advertised on Pistonheads for. His reason for selling was supposedly because he couldn't get used to the low down seat.
Dealer or opportunist profiteer? I think so. As it happens he got no bids!!!
Might have bought it myself for £2750 but not the new price.

On ebay it is always worth looking through the sellers feedback for the item you are buying. On more than one occasion I have found the item that is now for sale with feedback from when it was bought, just click away from the ones that have just been bought to re-sell, you are either looking at a dealer or an average joe who bought a lemon and has no scruples about passing it on. I sort the cars by distance and only consider ones that are within going to have a look range and are for sale from private individuals with no history of selling cars.
