Default Engine Movement

Some of you may laugh at me for asking this, but here goes..

I noticed that when I had an ATF fluid flush, the chap at the Volvo Garage was cycling through the gears to check the levels.. however.. when this was done, the whole engine moved, first, forwards, then backwards when reverse was selected.

The movement was surprising!

My question is, is this normal?

IIRC it 'could' be that the top bush over the engine has gone u/s. I don't drive an 850 atm (740) so I can only suggest whilst you wait for more replies to search back posts.

Stronger bushes for the engine etc come up on here reasonably often so it could be this.

It should move a bit, but not too much. It's very easy to see if the original rubber bush is shot, and if it's badly gone you'll be able to rock the engine back and forth by hand.

There are a number of options. A Volvo original can be fitted, and although cheap to buy, is only as good as the original and I believe needs a press to fit it.

I replaced my top mount bush last year with a Polybush - it was an easy DIY job, and it's featured in answers on here a number of times. The bush itself cost £20 and it tok me no more than an hour to fit it.

The improvement in the 'feel' of the car (a 2.5 auto) was pronounced.

It's important to get it sorted because otherwise there'll be undue stresses and strains on other engine mounts and ancilliary components.

Cheers

Jack

I does sound like your upper torque mounts are shot. I would recommend going with poly mounts if you don't mind a little bit of vibration at idle. They last forever it seems and they also help get more of your HP to the ground.
