Question for the Experts
I have to answer the question:
8. On the Rio Grande's website, there's a photo of Pat McGaughran (owner of 'The Rio') working on a car. What kind of car is this? A. 1959 Dodge B. 1960 Volvo C. 1963 Chevy D. 1966 Volvo E. 1966 Dodge F. 1962 Chevy Any help would be appreciated. Website is http://riograndemexican.com In order to get to the photo, select "The History". There is a link to to "view photo gallery" in the lower right corner. Scroll through pictures to find the photo of Pat working on his car (about 2 dozen photos in all). I have narrowed the results down to the Volvo Amazon, but am unable to determine the year. I understand there were possibly some "cosmetic" changes to the car when manufacturing moved from England to Sweden, but don't know if that is key to figuring out what year this car would be. I didn't know a thing about Volvo or the Amazon before trying to answer this question...after my limited research, I am intrigued & impressed. Thanks again! |

Looks like a mid / late '60s version that has had an early '60s grille fitted or an early '60s one which has the later (mid / late '60s) wheels & wing badging.

All I got was the splash screen telling me I couldn't view the site without flash installed. Why do people use this evil crap, why can't they write in standard HTML? All flash is good for that HTML isn't is the really annoying stuff, so there's never any excuse for using it.

Are all the grill spaces of interchangeable size. I though the very early spaces for the grills were different from the vertical-bar ones. I think this is probably an early Amazon with later wheels, but just a guess.

Having now seen the pic, I vote for the former... looks like it's got a servo on the bulkhead, so it's not an early one with no servo and it's not an end-of-the-line one with the crossbar effort. Mid 60s then.

With the choice between a 1960 and 1966 I would go with the 1966 car with early grills fitted.
More likely it would be about a 63/64 car with later wheels fitted. The big bit of evidence needed to give a more exact date would be the contiuation of teh dash around onto the door trims to confirm it is a pre 65 car |
