Default OBD-II Scanner Issues?

I'm struggling to find a DICE unit at the moment, so I just use a PRoscan OBD2 reader on my C30 1.6D ... and all hell broke lose!

I entered freeze frame data, and then it decided it had lost connection, so I turned ignition off and then back on. The reader told me there was no connection, but the car display started displaying the trip 1 display as ---- and the info message told me there was an immobiliser fault, sure enough it wouldn't start. Then it told me the Brake system had failed and I shoudl stop safely.

Very fortunately I was able to get out, lock the car and then unlock it, which seems to have got the car back to normal...though I'm a bit wary of plugging the reader back in.

Anyone any thoughts?

you must have a support power supply for the battery when doing this kind of work . some kind of 20A+ battery charger or DC Power supply set at 14.5 v

Definitely not battery related, I've now finally got Vida/Vxdiag nano combo working and that has also mysteriously disconnected whilst the engine was running. (Although it didn't send the car into meltdown!)

Should the OBD socket actually click into place? I don't have a lot of faith in the clamping power of mine, seems a really pathetic connection.

Mine doesnt click, but it sits firmly into socket, require bit of wiggle/pull to take it out.

Gonna be an electrical tape packing fix needed me thinks.

Despite working on cars since I was 17, this is the first time I've ever had to actually plug in an OBD thing, everything else has always had an actual on board readout of some sort. I feel like a right Noob!

Well this still isn't going well. Have finally managed to cobble up a VIDA setup using a VCX Nano, but much the same - as soon as VIDA starts communicating then the dash lights up like Blackpool on a summer evening, and VIDA registers a whole host of random faults, different each time. Some modules don't respond, click update and different ones come online and others go off.

Dodgy CEM is possible after the windscreen leak, although I don't know how I can actually tell given that I can't rely on any electronic connection to the car!

It's mostly driving fine, though it did go into limp (without any kind of warning light) which is why I'm keen to run diagnostics on it. Seriosuly considering getting rid of it, should never have sold the Mazda 3 I downgraded from.

Anyone fiddled with their CEM?

It is probably very similar to a mazda3, as a lot of the cars electrics are FORD based .

I had a similar issue.
The cel didn't always show up when turning on the ignition so failed the mot.
Upon plugging in a reader into the obd port all hell broke out.
Wipers running, brake fail message and immobiliser active.
Took all connectors off the cem and cleaned with contact cleaner and soft toothbrush and no more faults and a mot pass.
I also cleaned the obd port with contact cleaner.

Dont plug it in again then or you could end up making things worse. Just call a local garage up and see if they will plug their unit in to see if the socket is working ok

Just to update, I bought a dedicated VIDA laptop and a Chinese DICE clone and TLR version is it behaves absolutely fine on that, and just to be on the safe side I also changed the BSC module under the driver's seat which may have been affected by leak. All now bahving as it should.

The longer version is the first DICE i tried wouldn't communicate with the laptop, and the 2nd version showed bad firmware light required some weird ritual of running through the dice diagnostic app first before it would then show fine and actually work in VIDA.

Why the BSC? Well one of the errors that kept coming up was communication with the BCM, which was bollocks becausei t all worked fine. It was only when by chance I was looking at something that said that the only way to actually disable DSTC is to kill power to the BSC under the seat, which was a Eureka moment! Sure enough it is classed as under the control of the BCM so conceivably could have been a culprit in the phantom error. So for the sake of an £11 second hand one I swapped it.
