I’d say that winter and summer tyres are still relevant despite location for one situation.

I bought my XC60 with summer tyres already on, 7-8mm tread. With lockdown, it’s doing about 2k miles a year. A full set of 18” crossclimates would have set me back £600 near enough and I’d have binned four useable tyres. A used set of 17” wheels with decent winter tyres cost me £259 including postage.

I can now use both until my summers are worn, then put crossclimates on (or whatever the fashion then). Then sell the 17” alloys for whatever they are worth then. And have saved my diamond cut wheels from a couple of winters.

Or I could go with another set of winter boots for the 17s and sell them with or without the car in the future.

Gives me options, but prevents wasting a perfectly good set of summer tyres that the car came with.

I swapped to cross climates when the OEM's needed replacing. After about 45k on them the front 2 were worn so swapped in 2 new ones (moving rears to front) at last service.

No complaints from me

In the past I have always just used the summer tyres to worn. But yes good point.

Here in North Yorkshire, following the recent snows my CC have been tremendous. But we don’t have snow very long and it always tends to be wet a mushy. But CC have coped very well.

Lots of snow recently. Neighbour has a XC60. I have budget tyres on my V50. He was stuck on a hill, I had to stop behind him whilst he pushed up the hill. My V50 was able to move forward again, on the hill, and passed to struggling XC60.
Wow! Thanks for the heads up.
I've put my XC60 on Auto Trader and am now looking for a V50, ideally with budget tyres.

If you can’t find a suitable V50 with budget tyres, Black circles have a offer currently on CheapW4nk radials at £20 each?

Plan B, if you are a fairly steady driver and don’t tow a caravan is to run winters all year round. I’ve done this for the past 6 years. There is a slight drop in economy but not nearly enough to cover the £120+ for two tyre swaps.

You make a really interesting point! I have previously left my dedicated winter set on to April/May to get a decent weekend to change and then found a massively hot post 20C day. The winters drive fine. Slight increased wear rate and economy impact but in fairness probably not enough to notice.

Why the tyre swaps? A set of used alloys should see you through this.

That’s an option but I’d prefer a matching set and I’ve not seen a set for a 2016MY SE lux for under £600.
