With regards cold starting i was refering to Industrial Engines ie 12Ltr (400hp)+ not Automotive / Car Engines.

Yes you are correct with the proper preperations there should be no need for automotive applications. However i beleive in most cold climates engine heaters are a common installation.

Cozza did you get to the bottom of this ? same problem with my 2011 D3 intermittent no start , changed the fuel pump in tank , cured it for a while and then same again , exact same symptoms as yours ? could it be wiring ?

Sorry for the late reply. Yeh, my problem was the in tank pump. My local Volvo dealer (Arnold Clark in Kirkcaldy) were great and diagnosed the fault. They liaised with my warranty company on my behalf to sort out a contribution towards the costs (I think it was about £600 in total). Fingers crossed the fault has never recurred.

Good to hear you got it sorted!

Although getting the codes read is a good idea, any fault with the fuel system before the HP fuel pump often does not result in a fault code. If it does it tends to list low fuel pressure only, which does not help too much.
So if it fails to start and is code free (or lists just low fuel pressure), then if it's not a blocked fuel filter (Or an air leak into the unit from bad seals), then odds on the fuel feed from the tank is probably no good (Not all Volvo diesels have LP fuel feed pumps).

If using the priming bulb helps the engine start, then that does tend to confirm a fuel supply issue in many cases.

Having exact same problem. Going into a specialist diagnostic place on Monday as my garage couldn't find any faults. Probably getting rid once it's fixed. In 12 months it's had a new alternator, a wheel sensor went, now this. It's been well serviced. Getting fed up now.
