Default Activation of safety systems

See Here

Would you expect any of the safety system to have activated. If so what.

My car has all the optional stuff too. Pilot Assist, BLIS, etc

I would be surprised if your indicators didn't blink really quick as he was approaching and your seatbelt didn't tighten up.

Do you have cross traffic alert on your car as an option in the menu on sensus?

Yep

Asking as nothing happened

Previously actually rear ended by lorry , again nothing activated.

What should I do? No errors on dash or check sequence on start.

That's very close and the vehicle is approaching extremely quickly. I've had a similar incident with a vehicle swerving behind and just missing my V90 and the 1st I knew was when the red car symbol started flashing on the dashboard, making a warning noise and at the same time I was violently thrust into my seat by the belt tensioner. Thankfully I wasn't hit. If I was you I'd share that video with Volvo and get you car checked out if it has the safety systems installed that you say.

I would get this sent to Volvo (not the dealer but somebody high up or even go social media with it).

Intruiged to know what you'd expect to happen.

If you are rear ended you are forced into the seat, therefore front airbags wouldn't deploy neither would the seat belt tensioners. They are to protect you going forward. If you then hit a car in front above a certain speed they would deploy.
The same for curtains, they would require the front or side sensors to be hit or the vehicle at a certain angle (wheels off the ground).

Warning behind? To enable a vehicle to stop there would need to be city safe sensors at the back that would flash the hazard lights so far in advance to allow enough warning to allow enough distance to go off. Then they would also be going off if anyone was travelling behind under 2 seconds and if a car approach faster to overtake.

Crikey! How they missed catching the crash barrier and flipping on top of you is sheer luck…

Can’t see if they were on their phone but definitely not concentrating on the road ahead

I am sure the BLIS radar units are designed to pre warn and activate the motorised belts. This would reduce the severity of the impact by helping to hold you super firmly into the seat.

In a rear end shunt you initially get thrown back into the seat before being thrown forward. This is the exact opposite of a frontal collision (and we know that in a frontal collision airbags are for the forward motion, head restraints for the backward motion). So airbags are important in a rear shunt too.

But you are right airbags only trigger on the actual impact, but motorised belts should trigger beforehand.

This was a very close call indeed.

Did you catch him up and get his plate? His employer should see it.

I assume he completely missed you? Not even a mirror scrape?

Out of interest, why were you stopped? The road ahead appears clear......
