Default Which Transponder?

As I only have the one remote key

I am looking for an immediate "safety net" until I can get an additional remote key at my leisure.

To this end, I am going to buy a new blank std transponder key, and either have it coded in by stealer/indie, OR if it can be coded via Dice, I'll do it myself..

BUT, apparently there are two different transponder tags fitted to the keys, either a ID44 or ID48..

So how can I tell??

A friend of mine brought a car for his girlfriend and it unusually came with 3 keys. His girlfriend broke one but still managed to start the car with only the key blade, not fob(no transponder). Turns out the original transponder had been removed from the key and glued to the inside of the plastic around the ignition. This allowed the previous owner to have as many keys cut as he wanted because the transponder was always there to turn the immobiliser off.

Why have I told you this story? Because when he asked me to put the transponder back in the key and purchase another for the second key I had to find out what the difference was between an ID44 and an ID48.

ID44 - carbon type transponder, quite tough, looks like the black silicone chips you see in a mobile phone.

ID48 - glass type transponder, fragile, looks like a small test tube.

Cheers, I presume the tag is in the detachable bit containing the blade, just have to figure out how to split that bit, as my "flip" is also broken - New (old) key with solid loop on way after winning for £15 with free delivery

Just need to order the plain key now - Does your Dice allow transponder programming?

Programing keys? Not sure but I guess it must be able to if Volvo do it.

Watch this youtube video, it will help.
