running lights
Not sure if this has been covered before
I am a newby to volvos, got 940 lpt 2.3 97 What i would like to do is not have the lights on all the time, I have always been baffled as to why you would want to run about on glorious days with lights on all the time. Anyway could someone tell me how to stop them coming on at start up and only when I want them on by using the switch, I realise some people here might be baffled by my request but i have just never seen the point of it,especially as we are coming into lighter nights now. thank you |

Running Lights
The reason that Volvo's have daylight running Headlights or sidelights is that
In Scandanavia ALL vehicles MUST have their lights on All the time. This will also become law in Belgium later this year. You can cancel the running lights by simply removing the fuse for the daylight running lights |

Possibly not a good idea disconnecting the daytime running lights in view of the reply below.

lights
thank you,
will try to source an older light switch,if that fails i will pull the relay in footwell as was mentioned, not had the car long ,totally love it apart from the lights burning all day, also on the cards for the next dry day is removing the air con pump, radiator and associated piping,do not see a need for it either ( scottish weather ) , have removed it in a few cars before, also takes a bit of strain off the engine loading, why drive a pump when it will never be used.and lets some more good scottish cool air through to the real radiator, apart from the above , and the annoying seatbelt buzzer has been disconnected ( I do not,and never have worn a seatbelt,, it will be left standard as that is the reason that i bought it, 3 small changes to suit my personal taste is not bad, |

Air Con. andSeat Belts.
I wouldn't be driving around without seat belt fastened,
1) It's a road traffic offence.(Fine and penalty points etc) 2) If you had attended fatal accidents, as I have in the past, you would appreciate the importance of not making sudden and fatal contact with the windscreen or the steering wheel. Have you ever used a car with efficient aircon? I don't have it in my old 940 but my daughter has had it on her last three cars which I drive regularly. On the odd hot humid day we have in Northumberland it is a "godsend" and believe it or not it's very efficient at demisting the car even in the winter as it acts as a de-humidifier. |

Welcome to the forum. I think we will enjoy having you here as you are quite the devil's advocate. May you and your Volvo live long.

On the other hand

I have been in one serious crash where NOT wearing a setbelt saved the lives of both me and the car's driver as the car was wrapped around a lamp-standard; that notwithstanding I do wear a seatbelt excpet when manouevring the car in a confined space. Air-con is a personal one - I disabled it on the Valdez because the fuel cosumption penalty is around 8% (2.5mpg) and a decent H/V system should be adequate for most conditions; around town an open window is less of an aero drag than A/C a parasitic one.

I have been in a crash (the one I lost my 740 to) where I am 99% certain I wouldn't be alive without wearing a seatbelt. Sorry, but not wearing a seatbelt is no worse than walking across a road without looking if anything is coming.
Does A/C still cause a drag (and MPG drop) even when it's switched off?
