Default MOT / Part woes

Hi All,

So my 940 went in to MRG for a Service and MOT on the 28th Nov but was not put in for its MOT as it was not roadworthy on the following counts (this was a bit of shock as it’s my daily, I like to think I’m reasonably mechanically minded and look after my cars)!:
1. Corroded brake hoses
2. Leaking steering rack
3. Leaking rear seal on the gearbox
4. Corroded oil sump causing an oil leak

All of the above have been replaced however MRG are struggling to source a new sump, the ETA from Volvo in Sweden is the end of January (which is not a lot of good when I need to us ethe car for work)! I intend to keep the car and need it back on the road.

I do not see much point in fitting a second hand unit as the youngest will be ~18/19 years old. With this in mind does anyone know the whereabouts of a new Volvo OEM sump in the UK for a B230FK that I could buy and get shipped to MRG?

Many thanks Ben

How about fitting a used sump between now and January? You can get one from a breaker for peanuts.

The only time I have see them rust through is on boats. Even 240,s from the 70's are fine.

It should be possible to get a used sump in good condition from a Volvo breakers. If you get it cleaned up and re-painted professionally it will be pretty much as good as a new one.
It does seem slightly unusual that the sump has corroded badly enough to leak though, does it have other damage on it as well perhaps.

A previous owner could have hit debris on the road at some point?

Put it in for a test somewhere else. If the oil leak is severe then yes they can fail it but if it was that severe then the engine would have seized by now from lack of oil.

Like others have said, it's highly unusual for a sump to rot out, after all it has the best anti-rust mixture floating about in it all the time and usually things like that rot from the inside out because of condensation. As the inside is full of oil it's doubtful it is corroded.

It's possible i'm wrong but it sounds like that garage has been excessively picky and/or drumming up work for themselves - an MoT at a different (preferably recommended) garage might be the answer.

Out of interest, what is their MoT fee?

hi the last post has a good point . i had my car fail m.o.t. because garage was drumming up work . i was annoyed as i check over car prior to .m.o.t. they failed my rear shocks . and they are nivomats ,self levelling . no leaks but they said the car was to bouncey . so i called at kwick fit . i never usually go near there. but being a sunday morning and they where quite i asked if they could just check my rear suspension which they did no obligation free check . so up it went on the ramps and no leaks . he then did the pressure up and down on the back end . the service manager said they would pass this car but could not comment on the previous garage failing the rear shocks .

I can't see how points 3 and 4 = unroadworthy.

Yes, they need fixing, but I wouldn't have thought it's desperate before such time as you can get a new sump in Jan. As others have said, I'd go elsewhere for your MoT...

Forgot to mention my 760 just flew through the MoT with a leaky extension housing seal on the gearbox. Not even mentioned as an advisory.

Yup.
