5 cylinder diesel owners (D3 D4 D5) Need your opinion
I recently bought 2010 V70 D3 (5 pot) Volvo. Engine works well no noises or bad vibrations but when removed oil cap while engine was running I could see big amount of smoke and there's also tickling noise like nut or bolt is hitting camshaft. But again - engine works good and there's no noise when cap is on. I found a few videos on youtube with same thing but people in comment say it's normal for 5 pot volvo engines. To be honest I don't mind about the smoke, may be a crankcase ventilation can clean the system or replace hoses if needed. But that noise makes me think it's a faulty lifters or rockers.
Previously I had V50 D4 V60 D3 V70 D5 all 5 pots and I can't remember anything like that. But to be fair I don't remember if I ever removed oil cap on them when engine running I'll put some videos from youtube with similar thing. Please have a look at tell me it's ok before I start dismounting rocker cover and shafts |

For some reason the diesel 5 pots with the fuel filler on the right - as you look at the engine bay - do this. A right old tap-a-tap-a-tap with the filler cap off. It's normal.
Other, more numerous versions with the filler on the left aren't half so noisy with the cap off.

On the models with the filler on the right the elevated tapping noise alone does not automatically indicate a problem. You will also feel it with your palm over the cap, and if the engine is warm you may also see slight oil vapour being blown out the open cap.
My V70, right hand filler, does it and there is no definitely, positively, absolutely no leak. I know this for certain. I'm retired, home all the time, and I will happily make my V70 available for you to come round and inspect for yourself (I'll get the kettle on). You can't argue with bits of metal you can see and touch. It may well be that yours or another car has the problem. However, it is indisputable that models with the filler on the right are naturally noisier with the cap off simply because they are next to the pump and have nothing in the way of distance or baffles to damp the natural noise, unlike the more common filler-on-the left models. The noise on its own is not indicative of a leak. There is even a technical bulletin on the subject, you might find it an interesting read. You might also wish to consider that its a rotary pump, and not a plunger type, and doesnt actually tap or provide a pressure pulse anyway.

Well any link of the bulletin is welcome.
But also with a rotary pump there could be pulsing airbursts with a leak, you can hear that clearly in that youtube link And i doubt that a metal enviroment with a case on top can muffle any sound away , it acts as a channel . The point is that there are many weak points in the vacuum track that can pull air in....the most common ones are the engine mounts....but also the brakebooster can leak or the egr bypass valve on manual cars which almost no one knows it exists and almost always go bad. If you vacuumtest it with the engine off or with a warm engine then the solenoidvalve of the vacuum valve of the egr bypass is shut so then the leak isnt connected Last edited by 5cilinder; Feb 17th, 2022 at 19:51. |
