Managed 485.2 miles once but had to put 60.74 litres in to fill it up afterwards! This worked out at 36.31 mpg. Have got 450 miles out of several tanks since but 400 is more frequent.
I don't know what I would get if I was trying for economy.........

Steady on Tigers.
Now first things first.
[B]I DID NOT INTEND TO START A FUEL WAR![B] Diesels can be fast too, (there have been many tractors I have not had to overtake. P) We need some honour here as well, we are relying on people resetting their fuel computers at fill up and taking pics of readouts at completion of the orange light. Sorry to those without a FC but we have no proof of your mileage otherwise. We need to know your car model and mileage and any mods. We also need to know the driving that you are doing (ie Mway or urban, extra urban, A-roads etc) If this is going to be a 'mare to organise then we will just leave it as annecdotal. Lee

FC's don't give any proof? First they arn't accurate - secondly, can easily stick in another gallon at any time before taking the picture at the end!
Can only take people's word for it, no matter what the method. Best method is to fill the tank to the brim. reset the TRIP Drive until it's virtually empty, to get a good average. Fill to the Brim again - note the number of litres and note the distance covered. Then what ever your chosen method of conversion you have an accurate distance covered per volume of fuel. Vipes

Relying on a fuel computer would make the whole process meaningless. The only way to realisticly collect the data is to record the mileage via the trip meter and write down the amount of fuel taken to brim the tank as Viper_7 states. Okay the tripmeter might not be totally accurate but, assuming you have the right tyre size, the inaccuracy will be as constant - if that is the case it would be possible to apply a correction factor to the results. Besides everyone can do it this way, by restricting it to only those who have the computer you are excluding a large number of people so your results will be unrepresentative.
I record the mileage, fuel amount and cost in a spread sheet so I can spot trends (and possible problems) as they occur. It is not in my interest to tell porkies.

The trick is to get 2 cars lol.
One for day to day that's nice and economical, and one for doing events etc in to get the fix of speed. Golf GT TDI - 520 miles from full to fuel light, 55mpg and £45 to fill it Rover Turbo - 280ish to a tank IIRC (never have full tank in it these days) , and worked out around 27mpg last time I checked. approx £40 to fill old impreza type R I had - nigh on £50 to fill it and 250 miles to a tank, approx 24mpg, it was my day to day car but I changed it for the golf, saving a fortune lol. Not really comparible to the volvo's as all the tanks hold less than a volvo's do, but the mpg is comparible.

We could always use the mpg calculator on one of my previous posts for accuaracy. The problem with tank size is there are different tank sizes and some very inaccurate fuel gauges/fuel computers (being a 7series owner I don't trust mine at all ).
Just an idea. ALi

Hi,
Given you 1) Fill the tank to the top 2) Reset the trip or note the miles on the clock 3) Drive until nearly empty and 4) fill back up to the top you should then have an accurate indication as to how much petrol you have used and know how far you have travelled That will allow you to calculate the mpg or mpl for the journey.. Des. . .
