CV joint boot
Hi 2005 V70 petrol non-turbo automatic
Nearside driveshaft....the inner CVJ boot has split Now as it happens the outer CV joint has started to click....I replaced it a couple of years ago when the original failed.... And I couldn't replace the whole shaft as try as I may I couldn't get the inner joint out of the gear box.... So I thought I'd replace the outer joint and whilst the outer joint was off side up a new inner boot.... However the drive shaft has what appears to be a balance weight or something in the middle of it.... Meaning it seems I can't slide a new inner boot up the shaft.... And if I split the shaft from the cup in the gear box, obviously taking care of the needle roller affair, then I can't get the boot on..... Because of the needle roller tripod.... Help!! Or any ideas on how much it takes to get the inner joint out of the box.....I levered and hammered it last time without success to the point I thought I'd end up damaging something I'd rather just change the outer joint and the inner boot Thanks |

If you are taking the outer CV joint off anyway, one of these universal boot kits would slide over that central balance weight?

IF you can remove the tripod from the trans cup - on some models it will not come out, I would try to source another axle and just remove the inner cup that stays on the transmission. That balance weight I believe is metal and press-fit on the shaft.

Well that was my first idea and I bought an after market drive shaft
However as I couldn't get the inner joint out of the gear box I cut the clip holding the inner CV boot and removed the shaft.... The problem being the the after market shaft tripod didn't fit the original one stuck in the gearbox.... So looks like I may have to source an original used part in good order or at least one with a good inner joint and boot and go that way Anyone in north London or Herts got one!!! |

I also replaced the N/S driveshaft on my 2005 V70 last year... if I were you I'd try getting that driveshaft out of the gearbox again.
What worked for me was a pair of decent-sized pry bars, with a bit of "resolve" behind them! I think a kind of single determined decisive movement is more effective than banging / tapping away. I don't remember it being a massive struggle, though I do recall it taking a bit of effort and my first attempts not succeeding. By the way, although I was delighted with the price and apparent quality of the shaft I bought it didn't have a tuned mass damper on it, and I've since noticed a slight whine from that shaft when accelerating. Not really annoying, but it's there... |

Some may come out, but others will be completely stuck - even Volvo dealers have been unable to remove them. Some aftermarket locking circlips are too large, once pushed in there, it's physically impossible to remove them again.
