second hand gear box

I've solved the crunchinh issue with my gear box, it would appear that a couple the teeth have been crunched of the cog, So have to hold it into gear to get it to stay in. Luckily this is in reverse so can live with it.
What is the going rate for a second hand gearbox for 2003 s40 1.9, any ideas? And how do you know if it is a good buy, wear and tear wise? Never purchased anything mechanical form scrappy so any advice would be helpful as a new one would be silly money

your gearbox, the m56 is a pretty reliable gearbox,not prone to any failures.
try the salvo group who are volvo specialist breakers, used by volvo owners club members.
