Try disconnecting the MAF (just unplug it) and see if it will start. Chances are you have another problem elsewhere.

You could try squirting some Ezi-Start into the air intake while an assistant tries starting it to work out if it's fuel related. If it starts with Ezi-Start then look at the fuel pumps, their fuses and maybe the fuel pump relay.

Variable idle has completely stopped. The car now revs happily over 5.5 thousand, which it was not so keen on before, but the lumpiness is still there. Decided to replace the HT leads.

New HT leads have made the car smoother again, but the lumpy idle is still there.

Now in the garage being MOT'd and they will have a look.

Hi Delta.
Did you check.
-Throttle position switch, should "click" if you open the trottle slidly
-Gasket failure inlet manifold. Most of at cylinder 4
-spark gap?? and wich brand of sparks
-pull fuse number 1 with ignition of and wait 10sec. Motronic will be resetet

is your car a manual one?
1995 it should be with a M90, the double mass flywheel is cracked maybe
The vibration damper at the front of the crank is well known to rotate and produce bad vibrations.

good luck, regards, Kay

Spark plugs fine, the rest not checked. I will see what comes back after todays trip to the garage, which is going to followed by a couple of long trips to see a friend.

Unless you are lucky enough to find a proper old school garage with mechanics in it, they'll never think to do the user simple job of removing, cleaning and refitting the idle control valve. It's a half hour diy job even for someone with no mechanical skills.

The engine shake was traced to a leak in the inlet manifold gasket, which has been sealed (new gasket if it starts again).

I now have a smooth engine, with an even idle that is happier to rev higher than before. I am sure a few horse powers have been returned as acceleration feels a bit more lively.

The cost to solve all the issues was; sort idle control valve £0, did it myself, replace MAS £45 for part, fitted myself, plug leak in manifold gasket, free by mechanic doing MOT.

my pleasure ;-)

Do it immediately, this seal won't last long (a week?) and will crack the gasket even more, with bad luck you will risk a burned piston, no joke.
maximum 1 hr job.
Regards, Kay
