The engine case I think you are looking at is probably the gearbox. And if you have the Renault box (reverse gear is to the left of first, with a ring you pull up to select it), this will be the gearbox oil level plug.

Of course that must be the gearbox. I have the Renault gearbox. Thanks.
Gives me another thing to drain one day perhaps... Now if I could only find
this bleed valve on a coolant hose ...

As others have said mate, you really don't need it, the air will work its way out without any valve jiggery pokery.

There isn't one. Never has been. At least, not on either of the two V40s I've had.

Canis is right. I think they were fitted on certain models (T4 I think), but not on the others because there is no need for one.

I've just had my radiator out to check and re-route the famous wiring loom. Once back in I literally filled it up with coolant and ran the engine up to temperature with the expansion cap off. When the thermostat opens (at around 82 degrees) the coolant level will suddenly drop and a gentle wisp of steam will start coming out of the tank. Air locks should now be gone. Top it back up to level, put the cap back on and you can now turn the engine off and continue with your day. Or leave the engine on and drive to the shops/cinema/pub. Once the engine is fully cooled, check the level and you may need to add a bit more.

As martin93 does I run mine[whatever the car]with the expansion cap off.I set the heater controls to their hottest setting run the engine with expansion cap off until the radiator fans kick in twice and occasionally massage the radiator top hose, keeping an eye on coolant level topping up as necessary.
