Trying to confirm if DPF is fitted
Hi all,
Volvo and diesel newb here. I went to look at a 2006 2.0D S40 today with no paperwork. Having read up a little beforehand I wanted to find out if it had a dreaded DPF - I checked the 8th digit of the VIN which was a 4 (for Euro 4 as far as I understand, which could go either way). I rang a local Volvo dealership to see if they could clarify, but the guy I spoke to didn't inspire loads of confidence, but he did seem to think that there wasn't one fitted, based on the fact that nothing DPF-related showed up on the service schedule. I'd much appreciate if, based on this, other folks think this is sufficient to conclude it doesn't have one... I'm hoping to go back tomorrow to get it as everything else seems to be OK, but may have second thoughts if I'm wrong on this... It's a high mileage example at 171K, but the price reflects this - the engine is rumbly at idle, but I suppose most diesels are? Thanks! |

That link is good but incorrect when it says "if no ADM then no DPF". You may have a dry dpf (better). Then best way is the connector by battery.
Also VIN is no guarantee either. Complicated or what

Thanks, it does seem a bit tricky to figure out for the uninitiated, but also pretty important. I didn't end up buying that car in the end. One too many things to fix on it ultimately...
Am off to see another S40 on Monday though - it's a really high mileage (230k) 2005 model but has had loads of stuff replaced on it in the last couple of years and the price reflects it, so hopefully it still has some life left in it... Been told this one doesn't have a DPF fitted though, so that's a plus! |

That link takes no account of "E" as 8th VIN digit. Our 2009 1.6D has ADM, DPF and is Euro 5 but the VIN digit is E.
