Thanks a helpful read but my main problem is what can I reasonably replace the valve with when the part is obsolete. I'd be interested to know what workarounds others have used if any. Failing that I may have to have to put a straight piece of pipe in line and give up on heating. It's a car for my father however and he wants warmth beyond what the heated seats can offer!

Dave did you get that VW valve to work with the cables too? I'd love to keep it all working if poss.

I haven't tried Vicky, never had any trouble with the manual valves in my previous 740s (which use the same valve i believe) but have heard someone used the MK1 Golf valve.

I don't see why it shouldn't work as long as when the original cable is in the cold position it closes the valve and opens it in the hot position.

Presumably a bit of faffing about will be needed to get the adjustment right but it's not a complicated bit of kit, it's either open or closed according to the position of the control lever/knob, you just have to make sure that when it's fitted, if the control cable is at the shortest reach for closed (cold) then the arm on the valve will be nearest the cable and if the cable is at its longest, the arm will be furthest from the cable.

On the other hand, if the valve appears to operate the opposite way to the cable, turn it upside down.

Here it is.

As said I got it from a guy on another forum and can't remember who, what or even when.

I have had a problem getting what he sent me to an acceptable size byte-wise for this Forum so in all likelihood you will have to enlarge the attachments. The words and pics are exactly how they came in to me. I have not done this work around.

The eBay pic of the valve is for an Audi but it's the same as a Golf Mk 1 which I believe comes in between £4 and 7 on eBay UK. Laird Scooby posted one of his infamous 'links' recently here. There was also talk at the time I got this that Gates made a suitable valve but I know nothing about this.

If I need to do replace the valve on a RHD non-a/c 700 Series I would give this workaround a go.

Best of luck,

Bob

Now I come to removing said leaky valve I don't think the one in my car is for the 940 either. It doesn't look right at all! What do you folk think?

Cannot tell from that image. It looks as if it is still in situ. As I said in my how to, the valve itself is mounted on a platform from which it has to be carefully removed for replacement. Things may be clearer when you actually have it out of the car
