Default coolant expansion tank level sensor

Hi, I have a coolant level sensor in my 940 expansion tank, it is shorting out in the tank, falsely, as I am not losing coolant, does anyone know if they can be repaired or replaced?
Thanks

1998 940 Celebration, these were fitted to the 960, a bit more upmarket luxury, I got a second hand one fitted it and wired it up to the dash warning light, been good for the last 7 years, vaguely remember seeing a write up somewhere, on fitting one, but can't remember where
Cheers / Steve

Two wires on the coolant sensor/switch Jim, one goes to earth, the other goes to a warning lamp in the instruments. If you have the factory fit warning lamp, connect to that on the instrument cluster, if not fit a small light with a switched +12V ignition feed one side and the wire to the coolant switch the other side.

It only warns of low level though, no temperature function. It's difficult to see where it is on this pic but it's on the bottom of the tank :

Just to the right of the PAS reservoir on the tank there's a bulge, that's where the float switch/sensor in the coolant tank is.

Default Screen washer sensor wiring

For my '98 940LPT I found the screen washer level sensor quite pointless, so I used the wiring for that sensor to connect it to the sensor in the coolant expansion tank (3547710). I put in a new tank complete with this switch fitted, simply took the connector off from the screen washer tank and connected the wiring to the coolant level switch. On low coolant level my orange "screen washer level low" indicator now lights up.
Recently I had the instrument panel out and moved the screen washer indicator wire from connector B pos.10 to connector C pos.10. I now get a red indicator with a radiator symbol lighting up (originally for high engine temp. indicator that is not fitted).

The reed switch sensor just clips into the bottom of the expansion tank. It never gets wet as there is a magnet in the float inside the tank. It's easy to replace, just pull it out from the base.

It is a valuable modification to make to your 940 as it has saved my engine a few times when a coolant hose/heater control valve failed. The light coming is a scary thing.

There is an guide in the articles section on the mod that I used to fit the sensor on my car: Linky

The rectangular expansion tank should already have the float inside. I sourced the reed switch and relevant loom wires from another forum member that was scrapping an S90 (V90 also had them).

Default Low Coolant level light

I replaced the coolant tank on my celebration with one from a vehicle which had the exact same tank but containing the sensor.

Instead of messing about with the dash warning light I simply bought a blue warning light and fitted it into a spare switch blank. Much less mucking about, and it has warned me a couple of times that the coolant level is low.

Winner all round
