It was more to illustrate my point than a factual statement about the new cost of a Volvo.

When i was 18, i had a 144 auto, a friend had an 850 Mini. In 6 months it cost him more just in tyres than it cost me for everything on my Volvo (including tax, insurance, fuel etc) because the tyres wore out so quickly because they had to rotate a lot more for the same distance than the Volvo ones did.
When we added my friends fuel costs in, i was really shocked! The Mini drank more than my Volvo!
We were covering similar mileages each week despite living and working in different locations and doing our day release in different colleges.

So no, you wouldn't want to run a 740 for the same cost as a Mini!

Granted these are all ownership costs but to be fair, the Volvo was still cheaper!
I suspect your mate's tyre wear and fuel use indicate delusions of Paddy Hopkirk granduer Dave.

I don't even look at the bank statements

Strangely enough Ash, no. He was possibly a bit too gentle on the loud pedal. The tyre wear was even so couldn't even have been put down to the excursion into the scenery upside down by the previous owner.

However, the points gap was wrong, as was the ignition timing (too small and retarded respectively) and fairly sure the air filter was as black as the tyres were.

As for the tyres, i think he was buying remoulds that wore out rapidly.

Apropos Mini tyres, 'L.S.', I used to consider myself fortunate to get 3K out of the front and 5K the rear of a '61 Minivan running 10" cross-ply remoulds. In terms of pence per mile, the Volvo would almost certainly be more economical on tyres. In contrast, I got 27 and 33 respectively out of the O.E. Michelins on my first and only new car, a '78 Mini 1000 (still running 10").

Regards, John.

These would have been radial remoulds john on my mates Mini in about 1985 (car was 1980) but i doubt their lifetime was any longer. Given we were both doing about 12-15k a year, that would explain why he was going through tyres more or less monthly.

As for Michelins, i've not rated them since the tender age of 6 when a pair on my pushbike failed.
Another pair was duly sought and fitted and they didn't last long either, not to mention the grip wasn't great.
Next set i bought was a budget pair of tyres, as recommended by the bike shop. They lasted about twice as long yet were half the price and gripped a lot better.

Similar story has been repeated with car tyres so these days i won't keep Michelins on the car any longer than is absolutely necessary and won't even shortlist them when looking at new tyres.

Agree with Dave, I had Michelin tyres on one of my 360's and they had no grip at all in the wet to the point it was scary. Especially when you end up sideways on the wrong side of the road in the pitch black on the unlit A road to Stratford upon Avon!
