New discs "Do not remove protective coating" ????
Got my new rear Pagid discs and pads ready for fitting next week.
The discs are completely covered in a silver protective paint with big bold instructions saying “Do not remove protective film”. Not used to this . Ok, I presume the paint will burn/rub off on first brake application. But immediate Questions flash through my mind. 1) Will this reduce the brake performance on first few applications? 2) Will it contaminate the brake pads ? 3) What harm will it do if I remove just the paint on the pad contact surface. ? Any one else had experience with this ?

Had some EBC discs before that were grooved and had a fine layer of black paint on. The idea was that when the brakes were applied it left the small paint layer in the groove and wore off the rest making the grooves more prominent to the eye.
I just fitted them as they were and they bedded in just fine. As with all new brakes, bed them in properly and youll be fine. |

I've seen Mercedes discs like this, and yes you leave the coating on.
Salut! Pookie

Yes, Pagid is OE for several german brands and certainly popular and well respected with the Mercedes fraternity. You can't go wrong with them. Follow the instructions with confidence.

Mercedes discs are like this. You leave the paint on. It gets immediately rubbed off on the first application of the brakes and doesn't seem to cause any degradation of the brakes.

If they are greased and even if they are not, clean them with brake cleaner. It won't touch the paint (probably).
I had some painted discs from VW and no-one knew whether the paint was supposed to stay on or be removed so it got removed. Took bloody ages!

Leave it on, if I remember correctly some one told me that it helps the pads bed in quicker.

^^ that sounds sensible. It's probably microabrasive paint. Won't last long but will help to roughen up that surface for grip.
I'm used to having almost no brakes for the first 2 weeks after a pad change so it can't be any worse!
