My understanding is that no tuner will "need" to see a standard car prior to tuning. However, many tuners will no doubt "offer" or "recommend" to check a car before tuning and many customers will have extra peace of mind as a result. If the tuner is including the vehicle checks in the price of the tuning then it becomes even better value for money.
if and thats a very big if and what the odds of them finding a expensive part that just happens to need replacing (again no digs at any garages)but i have had this done to me and known the part has nothing a matter with it,i've even caught garages out on saying they have done my head gasket and they have not (nothing a matter with it).
You got to have your witts about you now a days.

I recomend that you make sure your car as in good condition before going ahead with a remap, check brakes, suspension and bushes for wear and tear if nearing the end of their life span renew. It is also recomended you do a stage 0 basically new plugs, ht leads, dizzy cap, rotor arm, change oil and filter, air filter, some say ignition coil and all fluids thats really down to you.
It is always good to have a drive or be a passenger in cars that have had diffrent remaps to see what one suits you.

I have 2 cars with the MTE remap and think it's first class, if you go for a stage one you can add to it as you modify your car and even go for a custom remap if your car is up to that.

The rica remap comes in sooner where the MTE comes into its own in mid range and further up the rev range where it holds boost very well, I would also recomend the feritta exhaust.
Not sure if some of you guys are having a pop or misinterpreted what I stated in the above post. The reason I stated about change of fluids and checking brakes, bushes etc is purley for saftey.
If you have your car remapped it is good practice to make sure your brakes and suspension are not worn or at a point if you were enjoying the remap and where compromised due to brake fade or brake flexi hoses bulging etc. Brake fluid does get contaminated or go off with age and use, to me it makes common sense to be safe.
These saftey checks can easily be done by yourself you do not need to take your car to a garage, however I do agree that there are some garages that do charge for things that do not need replacing and replace with non genuine parts and charge well over the book time to do the job. I have heard a few people make comments about jobs done that did not need doing, these type of garages or specialist only stay in favour for short periods.
