Default S60 2002 D5 engine whining noise

Hi I have just bought a 2002 s60 d5 the only problem I have is there is a whining noise from the engine sounds like a noisey Pas pump whine.
I have changed the power steering pump but noise is still there.
The vehicle also has a new alternator fitted before I owned it.
Hope you guys can help it’s driving me mad.

Whining noises.

Turbo siren? Rev it and if it sounds like a cop car behind as it slows down you you've found it.

AC pump? Ear as safely near it and get someone to blip the throttle.

Water Pump? Would need to come apart but coolant level checking regularly will help identify it as it should be leaking as well if it's that.

It could be the alternator has gone bad or he's lied to you about replacing it, same with the pas pump if you've used a used one.

There's a little trick for this, using a long screwdriver or a socket ext at least 12 inches long place it on the various parts you suspect and then put your ear on the other end, if you hear noises that you wouldn't expect (think dry bearing sounds) that will be the culprit, the sound should travel up the tool and you'll be able to hear who the noisy guy in the room is, be aware you will be messing near moving parts so be safe!

Thanks for info the pas pump is new and the alternator is new.
I have had the cambelt replaced with gen volvo kit water pump was good when inspected.
Would the aux belt tensioner cause a whining sound ?
I can only hear the noise at slow speeds or if I raise the engine rpm at stand still seems to go the faster the engine RPM. Can’t hear it at idle.

It could well do if the bearing is dry, sorry I thought you meant the cambelt one originally if you saw this before I edited it.

A small squirt of WD40 should let you know if it's that doing it, spray it behind not the front and only the smallest squirt and avoid getting it on the belt.

when I first got my 2003 2.4 in 2016, it also had a whining noise. Mine turned out to be the A/C compressor bearing. Unfortunately its a bigger job to do than the PAS and Alternator, but if you have eliminated the other possibilities, it may the problem.
