940. Swedish Vs Belgian
Which are better, Swedish built 940s or Belgian built. Ive got a 1991 saloon built in Sweden and a 1991 estate built in Belgium. Personally I think the trim seems to be a better quality in the saloon, but that it hasnt been as abused as my estate! Any thoughts? Tim |

RE: 940. Swedish Vs Belgian
This is the first time I have ever heard of the 940 being built outside GOTEBORG. Sure the DAF,V-S40 and 850 were built there but I'd thought that the 940 was always from Torslanda.
Anyway shouls I be wrong then I'd put it down to wear and tear, do not believe that volvo would have 2 suppliers for the same part within Europe.

RE: 940. Swedish Vs Belgian
I know many 740s were built in Belgium, but like you, I thought that all 940s were Swedish built. The glass atleast has "Belgium" printed in the corner of each window. I liked the idea of driving a Swedish car, I was a little dissapointed at finding out its Belgian built, although its exactly the same car it was yesterday! |

RE: 940. Swedish Vs Belgian
Apparently the standard of quality control at the Ghent factory is (Was?) higher than that at the Swedish factories, which is why for instance that Volvo elected to build the 850 model there from day one :) My Ghent-built 1990 model 740 is holding up very well, anyway ;)

They built the 940 there until at least 1995. The build quality is generally better from Gent than Göteborg but each car is an individual in that sense.
The S40/V40 was never built in Gent, nor was the 400 series or 300 series or Volvo 66, they were all built in Boorn in the Netherlands. The new S40 and V50 are built in Gent and Volvo has now sold their share in the Boorn factory. ------------------------------ 1995 Volvo 945 LPT Auto 1995 Volvo 850 GLT 2.5 Auto 1991 Volvo 945 GL Auto 1988 Volvo 745 GL |

RE: 940. Swedish Vs Belgian
Every Volvo has a little plate with the VIN code and such. On the 700/900 this is by the right hand side headlight but it varies. On it, it says Made in Belgium, Made in Sweden and so on. Don't forget that Volvo has (some now closed) factories in Sweden, Belgium, Canada, Malaysia, Thailand, Botswana, South Africa, Australia and I may very well have forgotten a couple. The VIN also has a two digit code for the factory but then you need the key.
