Default 740TD - head tightening query; and oil cooler info

First:

QUERY

My D24T head was replaced recently after a blown gasket and discovery of many cracks (saga in an earlier post), but the garage say that they can't find any requirement for the usually advised 1000 mile pull-down in anything they've looked at.

The gasket/bolt kits apparently only called for a retightening after the engine was warmed up after first reassembly, which they did.

Is it possible that the traditional advice to retighten after 1000 miles could have been superseded by better/newer gasket materials, or should they retighten regardless (and perhaps stress a 'set' gasket and do more harm than good)?

Also:

INFO

After the engine had run for a while the oil cooler failed (i.e. just the simple one round the base of the filter, and not the fancier one that links into the rad) - the garage thinks because added pressures from the fluid mix from the blown gasket were the last straw.

The good news is that they ordered both a VW and a Volvo part for comparison to see whether they could use the former - about 40 quid rather than something like 120 for the Volvo part. And they could, which is worth knowing.

Unless they used the head gasket for a post '93 D24, on your car it is still essential to retighten after 1,000 miles. This is because your engine has shimmed adjustable tappets which require adjustment every 20,000 miles. On my post'93 engine the tappets are hydraulic and adjust themselves within a couple of minutes of starting. As far as I know Volvo have not recommended fitting the later gasket to an earlier engine.

All the best, Peter.

Thanks, Peter

I don't know what gasket they used, though I assume the replacement head had to be a like-for-like and has the original style tappets. The head was supplied by the garage's usual engineering company, who they've used for years and is supposed to know about these engines.

Does that mean the garage needs to reshim the tappets if and when they retighten?

One of the interesting things the company said when they first examined the old head was that they had never come across a Volvo D24 head or any of its VW relatives that didn't also have cracked valve guides as well as whatever other problems were involved.

I'll put the retightening option to the garage when the time is near (pretty soon, actually) and see what they say.
