The original supplying dealer has checked the spec when new and any non service work they have done.

No Polestar installed.

I've checked with my local dealer too, but have yet to hear back from them.

Got to say, for a Volvo approved upgrade, there seems to be very little way of tracing or checking the history.

I know there is supposed to be a certificate, but short of having that, it would seem that the only people to tell you if it was ever installed, is the dealer who fitted it.

It is beginning to look as though your original suspicion is correct (just a badge engineering job). I may be wrong, but I think any work carried out by a Volvo dealership is stored on a data base accessible by dealers nationwide. On that premise, and as only official dealers and service centres are able to install Polestar there would be a record. Technicians would be able to see if it did have the upgrade when they hook the car up for servicing, which really brings us full circle, as the drive mode would have changed.
Sorry you just seem to be chasing your tail and getting nowhere.

Oh dear, I suppose driving a Picanto you have to do something to boost your street cred.

I recall many years ago I had a Vauxhall Cavalier as a company car. Bog standard mid spec. Whilst on hols in Austria I bought a stick on 'Tyrol' badge to fit alongside the rear badge.

Some years later, still in the same company, I came across it as it had been bought out by another employee. He was so proud to tell me it was special edition that I didn't have the heart to tell him the truth.

It happens.
