Default Noisy compressor

Hi all, first post so please go easy on me! I have just acquired a 2009 Mk2 S40 1.6 Petrol. The aircon compressor plug was disconnected when I got it and there is no gas in it. Pressurizing the system shows no leaks however after plugging the compressor back in, I can see why it was unplugged. There is a noticeable drain on the engine when aircon engages and the compressor whines, changing pitch with the engine. Turning aircon off stops the noise. I suspect it needs a new compressor or is there an easier way to overhaul it? Are these the same as the ford focus mk2 compressors? If so I can get a new one for £150 (under $200). Any advice greatly appreciated.

I've been through this myself, had the compressor sounding very 'grumbly' when activated, try not to use it because it could seize and throw the belt off.

Usually botched regass merchants don't add enough (or any) PAG Oil to the system when servicing and this wears the compressor - when mine was going it also stressed the Aux Drive Belt to the point where it was very cracked through overheating.

Sourcing a replacement is really a case of matching up the serial numbers etc, as far as I know Volvo used various types - mine was a 'Zexel' unit with FoMoCo stamps all over it
